Smiths in 45 Colt Ctg The Ultimate 25 and 625 discussion.Edited June 2014

The lust for S&W's in .45 Colt is still strong . Just last week a used 625-5 SDS sold for a little over $2800.00 on GB .

Yes, I was following that. I planned on placing a bid towards the end, but abandoned that plan when it rose to $1475. It hit $2800 in the last few minutes.
I already have a 25-7, which is basically the same gun in black.
The 25-5 is more cool looking, but not $2800 worth of cool.

Last year a 625-5 SDS that was still NIB went for over $3100.00 .

Well now I know why I had to build one you guys have all of the rest of the .45 Colt S&W

Yeah, that was me. Still haven't fire it yet. It might have cost too much, but I wanted one. Being in Canada, a total of $4600 by the time I got it here.

Put some beautiful Culina grips with roper checkering on it. I know, have to learn how to put pics on here.

Good for you. Mine's not NIB and I do shoot it but your piece (at least to me) represents the standard of big bore S&W excellence. That is truly one fine revolver. Congratulations.

I've done a search of the internet to find what the S&W-625 SDS looks like with no luck? What makes it worth soo much?

45 Colt Ctg

Bought in December 2016. Smith & Wesson Model 625-6 (circa 1996)
Mountain Gun, 45 Colt, Hand Ejector 6 shot Revolver, Stainless Steel,
no Lock, 4" Bbl, with useless for shooting wood combat grips.

Sorry S&W Enthusiasts no pretty pictures, I use my S&W's.
Shot weekly sometimes more, with my other Revolvers.
All handled carefully. Only cleaned when I feel like it,
as it should be.

SW62545lcMGfoam.jpg

Useless wood grips. Replaced after the first 6 rounds.
SW62545lcMGworthless.jpg

Quickly replaced with these for control and comfort. 100 plus
rounds put through the Revolver now. Very pleased with this Revolver.
The 45 Colt is impressive to shoot in the 4" barrel.
The 4" Bbl is very unforgiving on target, nerve and steadiness
is a must. I usually practice at 50 feet and beyond.

I totally agree . Those wood combats are poorly designed and are worthless for shooting magnums . Only good for looks .

Need another one ? Still NIB.

Looks to me as if your problem was the round butt grip which you changed to square butt? IMHO, one of S&Ws major screw ups.

Ha, don't tempt me, is it number 244? You could probably put it GB and get the same or close to.

I know it was a pretty good pile of money. The better half put a limit on how many handguns I could own. I had recently sold my Chevelle and she didn't say I couldn't get silly about what it would cost. :D

If you don't like those wood combat grips you can send them to me and I will get rid of them for you!

Allen-frame, I'm sorry but, I didn't see exactly who did your engraving in any of your threads, a link to them may also be helpful, please?

Yes, I too have been infected with the 45 Colt / S&W N frame bug and have owned many (too many) over the years. I just checked my SOLD sheet and I have previously owned two 25-5s in 45 Colt, and two 625-7 Mountain Guns in 45 Colt, all of which had PC action jobs. I've also previously owned two 38/44s converted by Bowen to 45 Colt as well as a switch cylinder Model 58 in both 45 Colt and 45 S&W (Schofield). I currently own a 625-5 5" in 45 Colt and several Bowen customized Model 58s in 45 Colt. I continue to experiment with another Model 58 converted into a 45 S&W (Schofield), also by Bowen. The 45 S&W is a far better cartridge for an N frame but commercial ammo is limited to Cowboy Action type loads. It's a handloader's dream however in terms of its accuracy, performance and efficiency.

The Model 58 pictured below has a S&W Model of 1955 45 caliber barrel cut to 4", with the crown and rib milled and shaped to look identical to the original factory 58 barrel. The front sight has an improved profile and the barrel/cylinder gap is a tight .004". The barrel's bore is .4515" and the chamber throats have been cut to .453". The gun has a complete action job, times early and consistently and locks up solid at hammer release on each chamber. The front of the cylinder has Bowen's signature "Black Powder" chamfer, and he also installed an internal trigger stop, a carefully fit hardened pin set inside the rebound spring. The sights have been regulated to shoot a standard 45 Colt RNFP load 1" above point of aim at 25 yards. During the regulation process 1.5" groups were routine (hand held from a bench). The grips are checkered Spegel Extended Boot grips, custom fit to the gun.

I've added a couple of 25-5s to the stable since the original post.

This pinned 25-5 has a new cylinder from S&W, and wears a black pinned in front sight and matching black rear blade.

This unpinned 25-5 is currently at S&W being evaluated for either/both a new crane or a new cylinder. Should find out soon.
