Not real sure that a metal charging handle would mess it up unless you are pulling it at an angle instead of straight back. I've had an aluminum one in mine and from what I can tell there is no unwanted wear.
As for the BAD levers being a gimmic, time will tell. Lots of things get items added to them and seem like a gimmic. If they are truly usefull they become an accepted add on, or the function is incorporated into the original item. It really boils down to function for the user and the application it is being used for.
