I'm looking to get the most compact, all-steel, double-stack, .40 cal or greater pistol. From looking around the forums, it seems like it's the 4056TSW that I'm after. Does that sound right?

To me, what fits you're description to a T is either a Model 4013TSW or a Model 4513TSW. Both might be a bit difficult to find, but would be well worth it. I don't remember off the bat if they're all steel, but either would hold up well & carry easy. The 4013TSW is a double stack, but the 4513TSW is not. Good luck!

If you want double action only (DAO) the 4056TSW, 4053, 4053TSW, 4046, etc... would do what you want. For traditional double action (TDA), in addition to what timn 8er suggested there are a variety of models.

I don't have any real interest in .40 cal, so I don't know what the market is like right now. Your best bet might be to look for police trade ins.

I think that Chicago PD authorized a DAO version of the CS40 for it's officers, so you might find some of those in your area.

Hi, UltimaRatio!

From what I have gleaned perusing the SCSW, other than a couple of Performance Center offerings, you are correct in that the 4056TSW is the only "regular production" pistol produced by S&W that meets all of your criteria.

Ok thanks! Though, while I'm dreaming, what are the Performance Center offerings you have in mind?

The 3rd gen double stack 40's aren't the most concealable but they can be with the right weather...like what I get! The only 3rd gen .40 I have is this one...just ignore that 9 that's in the way.

My favorite and super gun is the shorty forty. Alloy frame, steal slide PC gun so fit, finish, accuracy and reliability are second to none.

There were only about 1,100 4056TSW's made. If you find one snatch it up.

I should be asking you!
As I've always had a preference for TDA pistols, I had overlooked the 4056TSW. A closer reading of the SCSW reveals no other compact, double stack, steel framed .40 or .45 caliber pistols (and only one 9mm) from the Performance Center making the 4056TSW that much more unique (as others have pointed out).
I must commend your efforts at detective work to ferret out this unusual example and my curiosity compels me ask you: What led you to seek out this model?
And in all honesty, I'm even more curious as to why (or more accurately for what contract) did S&W decide to produce this pistol? And in DAO on top of it?

John?

Well, I started out wanting a 1066, 1076, or 1086, but wanted a bit more capacity and thickness to the grip (from the one I handled, they're pretty thin). S&W never made any double-stack 10mm, so I figured the next most powerful round in double-stack would be the 40. I decided I wanted all-steel for aesthetic reasons, and also peace of mind about the frame cracking with hot ammo. Then I started looking, and the 4056tsw is the only option out there if I want it a Smith. I actually think I prefer the DAO too. My plan is to find one as clean as possible, then send to the S&W Performance Center and have it worked over. Maybe even a little customization.

I must say you've thought this out carefully! A quick search of completed sales on Gunbroker turns up only one. I hope you are fortunate in your search. Let us know what you find.

Hogues

I don't prefer the black factory grips either. A set of Hogues cures that problem & makes the grip feel right, for me.
The ones for the 4056TSW look different than the regular Hogues, but they feel great too. Oddly, the Hogues on my 4006 make it feel bigger than I like, but all the others are just right.

UltimaRatio, this would meet all of your criteria except for being .40 or greater, but you still should consider it because the 356TSW round (true, no longer made, but readily available in FMJ and HP) is a hot cartridge that has been compared very favorably to the 357Sig. It is double-stack and all steel, 3 1/2" barrel, and with the extended mag base it has a 15-round capacity.

This is my HD weapon and I take it to the range often. It is a beauty and shoots lights-out.

That is a fine looking pistol! I was wondering about the 356TSW, if there were any that fit my criteria. I'm a sucker for the rare and unusual too, so maybe I should look for one of them.

Drop me a PM if you're interested in a source on NIB models for around $1,200.

Otherwise, you'll see these offered from time to time. Depending on whether you want a good used one or a NIB, these will run anywhere from around $1,000 to $1,200 or so, although some will be offered for more than that, and are probably somewhat overpriced.

I'm not so much partial to unusual as I am to just plain gorgeous, and I fell in love with these from the start. There's a 5" barrel model as well that is an excellent match pistol, and much as I would like to own one to complement my compact, I don't shoot match and really can't justify the expense of the big brother.
