Square Butts

I have always preferred square butts to round butts -- for pistols, mind you; not for my friends of the fairer sex, of course -- but had never really thought about why. (Revolvers, that is.)

Well, I suppose I find them more aesthetically pleasing, as well. (Talking handguns here, check the topic of the thread, may I remind you!)

But what I just realized, last night, is a square butt on a revolver gently directs your grip upwards, which is where it should be, for a good hold.

(Okay, fellas. Do your worst. And if ya get in trouble, don't be cryin' on my shoulder. You've been warned. )

I reckon that explains why a Colt SAA feels better in my hand than just about any other handgun I can think of.

So much that I usually put RB to SB conversion grips on my guns that actually have RBs. It just feels much better to me.

Years ago, on the forum here, someone had a 38/44 HD that had been modified to accept -- heck, it had -- a Colt SAA grip. While it looked a bit odd, I thought it an extremely cool piece. And it sure did look to be a comfortable, effective shooter.

I won't own a round butt grip; any round butt frame I own gets a conversion grip on it. I wonder how, during DA trigger pull, you folks can hold a gun still elevation-wise with that curve at the bottom.

Im a square-butt fan too...

Below is my (really the Wife's) model 60 no dash square-butt. It now sports a Tyler T-Grip, but to keep it true to the thread I decided to show it without.

This little J points and shoots well, so the OP may be on to something!

OBTW, I'm a GLOCK fan and have always heard the old grumpy shooters say, "GLOCKs always point high for me... I don't like the grip angle."

This square-butt model 60 points just like a GLOCK, so for me it is just about right!

Square butt's are fine for revolvers not to be used for pocket carry but are too bulky for pocket carry IMHO.

I'm particularly underwhelmed by square butt j frames: seems like a feature at odds with the intended purpose.

All that said, square butt revolvers are marginally easier to shoot for me.

I've had 2 RB S&W's and got rid of them both. I can't control them. Tried the conversions and they don't work for me at all. Wish Smith would come out with a square butt version of the M21.

Square butts shoot a little easier for me, round butts conceal better -- compromise in all things, as usual.

I will say that a square butt with magnas I can get away shooting as is (though given my druthers I throw on a Tyler), but a round butt with magnas needs a Tyler when shooting from a draw or shooting multiple shots in succession...

When I re-developed nerve and tissue damage in the web of my shooting hand, I found that most RB guns became painful to shoot. I can get away with +P loads and a boot grip in RB J-frames, but the 2" RB 64 I adore stays in the safe. BTW, it's not for sale.

Happily I found UM rubber RB-to-SB grips on the S&W website and ordered several. I was able to fire full power mags with these grips when testing my 686 SSR. No discomfort. And I agree that SB grips make a J-frame difficult to pocket-conceal. That's why derringers have RB grip frames...

You and me both! The late-model 21 discontinued in the mid 60s is my grail gun, but its price is in the 4-figure range. The new mfg. 21 looks WRONG with its RB. I hide it with a pair of Pach N-frame Grippers, but I still can't get the "wrong" feeling out of my head. I adore the feel and look of SB Magna service grips on a fixed sight gun like the 21.

Square Butts
I got a 22/32 HE round butt snubbie just a few weeks ago. Generally I have no use for
short barrels. Once in a while I would get one on trade then trade it off, never shot any
seriously. I always wanted to try a 34 snub,but never wanted to spend the money on a
new one. I have a K-22 and a J-34/4" that I shoot pretty good. Well I got the 22/32 rb
couldn't hit bull in butt with it. Put it on rest, no problem. I was convinced I could not
shoot that gun. I came across this thread and went down in basement, put J-targets
on gun. Shot 18rds. In bullet trap, shazam, right on. I was going to trade gun off. 422
is going instead. Snubby is new official fishing piece!
