Stimulus Checks

Surprised. I know a widow that got the direct deposit today. Since she always filed jointly, she also got her late husband's stimulus amount, even though he died 458 days ago.

She better hope the IRS doesn't find out. The interest and penalties, along with the fraud charges they'll file against her, will not be good.

Hardly fraud. Though I've not read the statute, I'm fairly sure that's the way it was meant to be administered, though it may seem strange to us mere mortals.

Dear God, whatever you do DO NOT spend one dime of that stimulus cash on anything made in China. Buy American.

No worries. I know for a fact that S&W makes their firearms here in the good 'ole USA and they will be getting a big chunk of my stimulus money.

Where exactly did you get this information? I'm curious since my wife died 10 months ago. I haven't gotten my money yet but I'll let you know how much it is when it arrives. By the way we always filed jointly.

From the widow herself. I saw the direct deposit on her bank web page.

PRO TIP: Check online with the IRS (Get My Payment | Internal Revenue Service) and verify that they have your direct deposit info.

DO NOT assume that they do! Even though they had my bank account info that I entered so they could withdraw what I owed from my account when I filed my 2019 taxes, they did not have the info needed to direct deposit my stimulus check - even though the information is the same! Go figure...

I'm glad I checked.

Apparently they based the amount they gave her on her 2018 taxes, which is still acceptable if she hasn't yet filed her 2019 return. The IRS has already made that pretty clear so she shouldn't have anything to worry about.

If you have applied your last year's refund/overpayment to your estimated taxes owed in the second quarter ( if you need to send it quarterly estimates), the IRS does NOT have your bank information. This is true if you filed in 2018 or 2019. Therefore, you will not get a deposit in your bank at this time.

You need to wait until the IRS opens a web application to enter your current checking account information, or wait for a paper check in the mail.

This is my understanding after studying the Internal Revenue Service | An official website of the United States government website. They are working on a way to enter the bank information but they aren't finished yet.

The site you mention is already up and running. Go to Post#70 above where I posted the link to the IRS website. If you check your status using this site and they don't have the needed direct deposit info they will tell you and redirect you to a page to enter it. It's what I had to do.

I can't read that unless I buy a subscription, which I'm willing to do.

I went to the official IRS site to enter my direct deposit information and it said that I couldn't do that since I am collecting social security and they have the info from that. I guess it's just a case of whenever the IRS and SS administration can get their ducks in line as to when I'll see the money.

Any other social security recipients who didn't have deposit info on their tax returns get the payment yet?

I checked - they do not have my information.

I've now tried seven times to enter the information and repeatedly get "technical difficulties, please try again later."

If you go to the FAQs and dig deep enough, you find there are a LOT of people having the same issue. The IRS's only answer is "please keep trying."

That said, if the IRS doesn't get your electronic info, they will eventually mail you a check.

No dice for me. I have to wait for a paper check sometime in the Summer of 2020. If your direct deposit information was not included on your 2018 or 2019 returns, it looks like a paper check for you. Too bad we applied our 2018 refund to the quarterly estimate so that our direct deposit information was not on file. It doesn't look like it can be added successfully now.
