Taking Off the Badge

I pulled the pin in '97 after 30 yrs. as a city cop and have thoroughly enjoyed retirement. I've stayed close to my former dept. through our retirees association and the only thing I really miss is being a young uniformed cop working a beat every day. Best of luck to you and most of all, good health.

Congrats Bill, you earned it. I pulled the pin in 5/13 and can't say I miss it. My badge is in lucite on my dresser and my creds are in a drawer, and I don't miss the federal politics. It's good to get that check every month tho, enjoy yourself.

What BP session were you in Bill, I have a hunch we might have been in the same class, although I could be wrong. I was in the 148th...

I hesitate to say congrats as I can't imagine taking the badge off.
I'll say you've earned some time off and job well done. Enjoy your retirement. That badge is and always will be a large part of who you are brother.

Bat, the outfit I was with the longest and that I retired from was U.S. Customs, but I also was a cop, deputy sheriff and state probation/parole officer before I went federal. All total I had some 38 years wearing a badge and gun.

I had two mentors in my career: Travis B. Martin, dinosaur extraordinaire ("Son, it ain't for real", and: "I know I can't catch 'em all--but they can't stop me from trying."). The other old dead white guy was a Roman emperor, Marcus Aurelius: "Care not whether you are cold or warm, if you are doing your duty."

I like to think that when we go, and if we can get past St. Peter, one of the first people we'll meet will be St. Michael, patron saint of soldiers and police. He'll say, "I'd like to buy you a beer; what outfit were you with?"

Welcome to the club.

BPA 148

Bobcat...we were in the same the 148th Session...we don't need no stinking badges! I designed the class tee shirt if you recall. I left BP when they started talking about the amnesty for illegals and then put us on a traffic check point, which I hated. I left the feds, had a break in service and when I came back with U.S. Customs I was under FERS. Great to hear from you!

I'd just like to thanks everyone for the nice congratulatory messages and the many likes. I'm already starting to adapt to retirement pretty well and am staying busy with home projects, shooting, writing and adding items to my Facebook site THE FIRING PEN. It great to join all you retired LEO's on this Forum and to all you LEO's still on the job...stay safe!

Bill

LaVista Bill: Retirement is great! Been retired 2 years after starting in 196. The upside is you can do what you want after the chores are done, the downside is the body ain't 21 anymore and there aches and pains to deal with. Enjoy every day to the fullest, even if it just laying around while it rains outside, like I did today.

Your post hit me kind of hard. I retired with 27 years on the job and followed my retirement plan with a vengeance. Together with my bride, we built a log cabin in the Pocono Mountains. We spend our summers living on our boat on Lake Ontario and out winters at the cabin. I drive a school bus now. But I agree with our brother officers out there, you never take the badge off. It was who I was and who I still am. Enjoy retirement!

Congrats and best wishes for a long and healthy retirement. Just about 4 years left for me. But whose counting!!

Glad you are adjusting. Life is great on this side of the coin.

My child bride still has a few years to work before she retires. Tonight she said hey Dear there are some job openings in the paper.

I coughed and said don't scare me like that. Caused me to do a typo on the S&W forum. Do you folks know what she called you?

Well let me tell ya, I beat the gorilla to the punch and gave her a timeout for a week.

You can take off the metal badge from your shirt but never the one inside you. Once a Cop, always a Cop,

I've never looked back, but (hint) you never take off the badge.

A better description might be:

There is no such thing as an ex-police officer!
Why, you ask?
There is no such thing as an ex-hooker, is there?

"I designed the class tee shirt if you recall", I do recall and still have mine, although it seems to have shrunk over the years, must have been defective cotton. I sat right next to you in class. The BP academy has been dumbed down considerably I've heard. Enjoy retirement vato, as I've said, I don't miss CBP at all! Take care...
