I'm thinking about bluing a 1911 45 acp from 1943. I know it was parkerized back then, but by the time I got it. Someone sanded it or grinded it down to bare metal. Would love to try a hot blue like my dads model 17. It's just beautiful. Up in the air if I want to have a gunsmith do it , and if I could find a gunsmith these days ? And pay a good amount for it, or should I give it a whirl ? What's a good brand to blue with ? I feel the historical value is gone forever, I'm more interested in the looks of it now. Any input ?

Well, my personal opinion is that if it were mine I would try and restore it to period correctness as best as possible. If it was Parkerized originally, then that is how I would restore it, but admittedly, that's me. You have to do what you like and what you will ultimately enjoy.

Call colt and ask them the 64 question on a refinish is the best I can tell you. Most of the local rebluer's put out a black finish. why not just repac it?
