The Cow skunked me this evening - because I was lazy!

I take my BBQ-ing somewhat seriously and around the neighborhood we are known for serving "the perfect steaks" - I do try my best and normally they are great! When I buy steaks I spend a good while picking out what I deem to be the best package Costco has at that time. If I don't see anything that suits me, I usually pass and go back the next day. So last week my wife and I were at Costco and I selected what I thought looked like 4 nice steaks. They were Prime Ribeye's because the Choice selection just was not cutting it that day but they did not quite have the marbling I normally like - I did however select the best package I could find. I guess I broke my own golden rule about walking away and going back the following day - got lazy. Tonight we had a few friends over for dinner and I opened up the package that my wife defrosted earlier and for some reason the steaks just did not look like Prime as they normally do. Hmmmm, at this point I did not really have much of a choice so I seasoned them, let them sit for an hour and after we had our salad I went out to the grill and did my thing. They were grilled to perfection (medium rare) but when I sliced them they looked a little too lean but we sat down to eat. After the first bite I could tell my suspicions were correct - they were not great steaks at all - far from it! They were actually too lean, not enough flavor and because they were so lean they did not have the bark we normally like. Oh- there was nothing bad about them however they did not have the tender juicy flavor Prime Ribeye's usually have. In fact, they tasted more like lean NY Strip steaks. Strip steaks are not bad, but when you are paying $20 a pound for them they should taste like Prime Ribeye's, not NY Strips.

I was upset but my guests said they were fine - I knew better and they were just being polite I think! Anyway, I guess that should be the worst thing that happens to me this month - lol. The moral of the story is next time I buy steaks if I don't find exactly what I like - I am outta there! Normally Costco's steaks are terrific and sometimes their Choice Ribeye's look so good I buy them at $4 a pound less than Prime. In this case I got skunked in reverse. We gave the left over steak to our guests for their dog - don't think he will complain. This is a perfect example of doing mostly everything right but getting a little lazy.

I don't mean to sound like a cry baby here but like I said I've got a reputation to uphold LOL!! :p I am pissed off at that Cow and even more so at myself because I did not walk away go back the following day  Lesson learned / rant over. BTW, the Bourbon of the evening was Knob Creek 9 year old Special Reserve Cask Strength.

Next week's special dinner will be Jumbo Wild Caught Pink Gulf Shrimp wrapped in Bacon over Jasmine rice. I hope the shrimp cooperate - ha ha. That's always been a winner.

some might not fully understand your feelings, as a grill master I feel for you. Medium Rare is there any other way to grill a steak? NO.
Murphy's law if you have friends over thats when things don't work out right.
Lets hope the shrimp don't let you down.
Thank you Sir! Some people think throwing a steak on a BBQ is just to turn it a different color - lol. I like to BBQ a steak to its full potential - especially when spending what I consider to be a ridiculous amount of money on.

Gee, Going to try Aldi’s steaks as daughter said they were good, will see. Publics is a crap shoot as one can pay big $$ for supposedly excellent steaks only find they are tough as shoe leather. Harris Teeter is kind of a drive but worth it.
As for shrimp mine are swimming in the Am and get eaten in the PM. Advantage of living on the coast.

I am shocked I tell ya!
You froze the steaks??
Never freeze steak. it will be fine in the Fridge for several days

Turn in your Chef card.:)

(So you are the guy standing at the meat case deciding what to get)

Ever been to Berns Steak House?

What is this cow meat you speak of? My local grocery store is offering friendly financing terms on beef but I don't have the credit credentials to participate. If it wasn't for birds, I would be an unwilling vegetarian.

Here in Reno there is a meat store that sells quality... meats from chicken to Elk.

At a friends, I was served a peace of beef steak that was so aged and tender, that I did not like it.
It was like soft oatmeal. No meat "Grain" to even chew up.

It was medium rare and had a good flavor, but.........a slice of orange section was tuffer !
