Recently I clicked on one of those "paid for adds" at the bottom of news pages. This one was about things that were historically inaccurate about the "old west".

Did you know that there were very few guns in the old west?

Or that most cowboys didn't ride horses because they worked on foot around the ranch?

Derby and top hats were more common that cowboy hats?

There were only 6 train and bank robberies in the west between the Civil War and the 20th century?

And I can't even say that the person/people who put it together were "english as a second language" speakers as most of these click bait pages are, as the english was pretty good.

Oh well, let them have their little fantasies.

I've heard things, on line, about these old "facts"; I just wonder about the reliability of their resources.

It isn't changing history. It simply states that the depictions are out of date. After all when was the last time you saw some guy riding all over the country on a horse with a single action revolver righting wrongs.

Showing people riding in a 1955 Chevy with no seat belts would be an out of date depiction of how people travel.

A film about the Civil War with horses, period cannons and rifles and sabers would be an out dared depiction of warfare. No machine guns, claymores, helicopter gunships etc.

Happy Days is an out of date depiction of how kids behave.

Why would any of that require a warning?

Are you streaming or watching cable?

I haven't seen that on cable, dish but did on HULU or Amazon. One of the warnings was about "depictions of consumption of alcohol abuse" - Mad Men IIRC.

In the UK they have got so sensitive I suspect many TV shows have an advanced warning something like this:

"The following program contains images of people who may be slimmer, fitter, and better looking than you. The actors may also have voices better modulated than yours, demonstrate superior diction, and use a wider vocabulary than you are accustomed to. Removal of sharp objects and poisons from your vicinity before viewing is strongly advised."

I reckon they'd have to show that disclaimer before just about every show that aired prior to around 1980.

All in the Family...The Jeffersons...the Dukes of Hazzard (the roof of that car!)...the television movie Brian's Song...Sanford and Son...the Richard Pryor Show...any Cheech and Chong movie...Animal House...the Blues Brothers...and of course...the king of them all...Blazing Saddles! :)
