The Russians have gone in

And this just today as well:

Reuters reported, "Monaco, an international hub often favored by wealthy Russians, will also proceed with freezing assets and imposing sanctions on Russians in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, said a statement by the Monaco Royal Palace."

We probably don't want to get started just posting news links, but one thing that I've found annoying is the relatively low quality of military analysis across the media, compared to previous conflicts.

I finally came across an interview with General David Petraeus. As he mentions, he actually has experience invading a country. While his insights are general in nature, I find them quite to the point.

I have a few Semi's that can easily be converted to full auto + a long range sniper rifle (30-378) Weatherby. I would gladly donate to Ukraine or go @ help. + plenty of ammo.
At soon to be 70 I have nothing too loose. Plus I will be protecting my grand children as I look @ it

From the BBC:

Newly released satellite imagery shows a massive convoy of Russian armour descending on Kyiv.

Pictures taken on Monday, before noon in Ukraine, show Russian military units near Antonov airport, about 27km (17 miles) from the centre of the capital.

According to Maxar Technologies, the satellite-imaging company that released the photos, the convoy is nearly 17 miles long (27km) and "contains hundreds of armoured vehicles, tanks, towed artillery and logistics support vehicles".

Russia has used vacuum bomb, says Ukraine envoy
Russia used a banned thermobaric weapon during fighting in Ukraine on Monday, the Ukrainian ambassador to the US told American lawmakers in a briefing.

"They used the vacuum bomb today, which is actually prohibited by the Geneva convention," Oksana Markarova told reporters after emerging from the congressional briefing. This claim has not been verified by the BBC.

Thermobaric weapons do not use conventional ammunition.

They are instead filled with a high-pressure explosive, and suck in oxygen from the surrounding environment to generate an extremely powerful explosion and pressure wave.

Their use has been seen before in the Russian republic of Chechnya, according to Human Rights Watch.

On Saturday, CNN reported seeing a thermobaric rocket launcher near the Russian town of Belgorod.

Not sure about air superiority. (Did Gen. Petraeus address this in that video?) If not, targeting their fuel supply in that convoy would be a plan if they could do it.

I think the majority of surviving Ukrainian aircraft moved to other countries. Saw a number of Ukrainian transports landing in Poland last week. I agree though, that could have been something akin to 199's Highway of Death.

I wrote earlier in this thread about Harijs, the father of a close friend. He was Latvian, endured the occupation of the Baltic States by Stalin, and then was drafted into the Wehrmacht when Hitler turned on Stalin and expelled the Russians from Latvia.

For the rest of his life, he harbored a white-hot hatred of Russians and Communists, and spoke frequently about how nothing was off-limits to the Red Army in battle...their savagery was off the charts. (To be fair, the Third Reich wasn't exactly noted for chivalry either.)

I've been thinking about Harijs today, listening to the news of some of the weapons the Russians have deployed or are ready to deploy. It appears Putin really might intend to destroy Kyiv, and kill a whole bunch of civilians, if he can't win a simple military contest with Ukrainian soldiers and militia.

General Wesley Clark, the former NATO Commander, has passionately argued that the free world has to get involved in this, to prevent the slaughter of innocents that now seems likely...I sincerely hope EU and American leaders are listening to him.
