The ultimate Model 19/66 Combat Magnum thread

...a 66, no dash and the serial number is 7K707XX.
Thanks. Stainless rear and front sight or blued rear and red ramp front?

...stamped "S" indicating the true stainless parts rather than the flash chromed carbon steel ones which seemed to actually last longer...
:)Good for you! Stick to you guns!:)

They marked the stainless parts with an "S" (or "F") to keep them separate from the carbon steel parts because without finish, they are both 'white'.

question....were any 6" barrel round butt 66s or 19s made by S&W??
Yes. Product code 102709 was a 6" Model 66 with RB.

I don't know if any Model 19s were but they did switch over to all RB in 1995(ish) and the 6" barrel was discontinued in 1996 so it is possible.

thank you. i'll keep my eyes open for one. i want a 6" 66/19, but the square butt frames don't fit my hands too well, and i can't get myself to "modify" one.

As stated, it was a police trade-in (on a whole table of its siblings) so I picked the blued rear / red ramp front sights, which I assume were original, but may have been an upgrade, but who knows(?) I thought all SS internals would be cool to prevent (or at least slow) rust & corrosion, not thinking about the wear factor. I am now thinking that the hard flash chrome may have its place!

BTW, what if anything does the 7K7 etc. serial number indicate?

A blued rear sight and red ramp would be original to a Model 66 in the 7K7xxxx range but with S&W you can never tell so I had to ask.

The serial number can be used to date when it shipped. When comparing its attributes to other Model 66s serial numbers, we can (try) and narrow down when changes were made. For example, a Model 66 in the 7K7xxxx range should have the gas ring on the yoke, as opposed to the cylinder.

Well - I can now join in on this thread.

I picked this up on Monday from a local dealer...

SW-66-1-3.JPG

Model 66-1, SN: 62K57xx, red ramp front sight, no white outline rear sight, grooved combat trigger. It came with a set of Hogue rubber grips, these magnas were just laying around.

It needs a little work, so I think I'll send it back to S&W for a little TLC - then it will be put to work, teaching new folks to shoot. :D

Take care,
Bob S.

I'm new here. Like 1/2 hour new ! Went quickly to this Combat Magnum thread. Like many of you I consider this model to be my "ultimate". I only have one. It is a 19-4, with 4 inch barrel. It was my daily duty gun in the early years of my LE career. Since "retiring" it from on-duty work, it has become my most carried gun for off-duty carry. I hunt deer with it and have used it to take a nice 5-point buck a few years ago. Quite simply, the 4-inch Combat Magnum is, in my opinion, the best looking, most comfortable-carrying gun for my off-duty and woods-bumming needs. I have shot this one so much that it has recently had a new barrel and cylinder installed by S&W. Next, some scroll engraving !

My 19-3 with Ahrends cocobolo grips. Bought it in 1974. Not a single problem.

Yes, welcome Bigrams! We have a lot of good S&W K frame stuff here.

And up at the range we had about 30 minutes of good shooting before the light sprinkles became rain a couple days ago. Here is my 66-2, wearing some of those hi tech Pachy Compac's. And I simply can't think of a K frame carry gun without a J frame as sidekick.
