In regards to #5, I worked at a University Police Department that did not allow back-up guns. We tried and tried with no luck. We even presented a proposal showing actual case studies where back-up guns saved Officer's lives. Nope, Nada, Not happening, No.

I can't fathom the reasoning behind that policy, or that of the Ontario agency. It seems to me (I'm not in law enforcement) that the job is difficult and dangerous enough that officers should be equipped for any contingency. That would seem to allow if not mandate backup guns.

What are those agencies' positions on off-duty carry?

you need to look for employment elsewhere as the admin have demonstrated that officer safety is not job one.

I mean we're not asking for a tank or should fired rockets just because the bad guys have them, but a BUG is essential, practical, and standard police gear.

When I went to work at the University in 2000, the Use of Force ladder consisted of spray and then gun. No batons were allowed.

We got Tasers in 2007. I left in 2009.

Great place to make money, but it is a babysitting job.

When I got there the yearly arrest numbers were around 24 for the year. I came from the Sheriff's Dept. The first month there, I arrested around 12. The second month it was around 20 with half those being DUIs through campus. The third month was right at 25 with about the same number of DUIs. I was called shortly into the office and told to "cut that **** out."

Aww well

While we are on the subject, there was no batons. I was told when I asked about it, that an officer had tried to get the ASP program approved. He did not do all of his homework when he turned in the proposal.

The president of the university got on the internet and found out that an "asp" was used in history as a "tool to slay or control the unruly." So the president came back with the question of "we were going to use the sticks to slay or control his students."

The officer was not prepared with an answer and there will never be an ASP baton at the University.

You have to remember that the people running this university are all doctors or experts in their field and have no walking around sense.

"Obviously in my car when I am not"

Ummmm.....no. I unload my computer, hot spot, shotgun, rifle, and gas mask every time the car gets parked.....which is in front of my house. My vehicle is with me 24/7. If I am out of it on duty it is locked and I'm usually not far from it. I carry 3 spare keys located in 3 different spots when I'm working.

At least someone realizes this is all gov't surplus. However, they were all in excellent condition when we received them. Matter of fact, they looked to be unfired.

Our agency has multiple gas launchers. Multi shot 40 mm jobbies. Only the tactical guys have those. The tac guys carry Rock River M4s. They are also issued an MP5 in addition to an 870. A couple of the tac guys carry Benelli M4 shotguns.

Before retiring as a Special Agent for U.S. Customs, I was allowed to carry a miriad of handguns and rifles.

I carried a personally owned 1911 or Browning HP, then in 1986 I bought a Glock 17 for my tactical operations. In 1994, we no longer could carry personal weapons. I was issued a Glock 19 and a Glock 26.

Rifles, I carried M-16's until 1987, when I was selected to test and evaluate the Steyr AUG-P select-fire rifle. I carried the same rifle for 17 years, then when it had a roll pin fall out, the armours sent me a new AUG-P. I carried it for another year, then retired.

Shotgun was always a Remington 870.

Holsters varied from concealment holsters to tactical thigh rigs.

The firing pin on mine looks much the same as my personally owned AR15s. They all remind me of framing nails for some reason.....

Those of you who carry rifles, do you have to qualify on them? Seems a very high percentage of you have them. Like I said in an earlier post, that struck me as odd. Most LEO's who post here are gun enthusiasts, is there a similar percentage of non-enthusiasts who have rifles in the trunk too? Is this a recent trend? Seems everyone in Law Enforcement is almost a pseudo SWAT member now.

My department does require we qualify with the rifle. It is not a recent trend for us. I have been qualified with the rifle for 25 years. A lot of our cars have rifle racks right next to the shotgun racks, much easier to deploy than from the trunk.
