I finally picked up a SD40VE from Academy tonight. I'm figuring I did pretty well price wise with all things considered. I've already ordered the spring kit from Apex and now will be looking for some ammo. Between a local shop and a gun show this weekend I hope I can get a couple hundred for under a hundred :).
Anyway, I will be looking for holsters. Options on what works IWB or out and position would be helpful. My current carry is a Sig P238 and change between 1:00 and @4:30. I'm hoping I'll be able to pull the later with the SD. I just wanted to step up a bit in caliber, so ...
Any other tips or tricks would be appreciated. Tom

If you are looking for additional magazines and you can't find any SD40VE magazines, then SW40VE magazines fit and work very well. The only difference is the base plate. They seem to be more readily available. In fact, there are two SD40VE mags for sale in the classifieds right now:

I joined a while back - I was going to buy a M&P and for whatever reason decided not to. I come back from time to time to read up on something or another, but since I didn't really own anything S&W I really didn't have much to add or ask about. But now that I've joined the family!
Thanks for the information on the mags. I'm good for now! (esp. since I don't have anything to shoot - my first .40)
I do have a gun oriented business that keeps me busy on other places. I make a 1/3 mix gunstock wax that is used on "collectibles". I forget all the places I'm supposed to go sometimes :)

welcome to the family :) I recently purchased my SD40VE and picked up a Blackhawk Serpa holster for M&P (number 25). I use the paddle attachment for it and I'm very happy with it. Before you install that spring kit, spend a few hours dry firing, the trigger isn't that bad and smooths out over time (dry fire the hell out of it). I also picked up a set of Tractiongrips for mine. I like the minimalist approach to adding extra grip to the polymer grips. No added bulk and a much better grip. all for less than $10 shipped.

I also put on the traction grips. $8.99 shipped to your door! I also agree with waiting to install the Apex kit. I have 750rds through mine now and i am NOT going to change the trigger. I am accurate with it and i feel safe with that trigger. You want a hard trigger, shoot the bodyguard .38 special! Great gun for the money, extremely accurate and reliable if left stock

i am NOT going to change the trigger.

Nor am I. Frankly, the trigger doesn't seem that bad to me, especially on a gun with no external safety. It's not 1911 smooth and light, but then it's not a 1911. This isn't a target gun, and I think it is fine for defensive use.

It is up to each individual, of course...and not knocking anyone for the choices they make...but it always concerns me that changing out critical components (like fire control systems) may induce malfunctions.

The only changes I have made, and will make, are to put in a Galloway stainless steel guide rod with the stock recoil spring weight, an extended take down lever, and I have ordered the traction grip overlays. Oh, I do plan to put on a M&P rear sight, when I can find one in stock. Otherwise, I am going to shoot it as is.

I really like this gun...it's kinda like that ugly, scrawny kid that gets picked last for the team, but makes the winning score. :)

Just to add my 2 cents I agree with the earlier post, I would hold off on the trigger kit also. I'm new to semi-autos, but shot my sd40ve yesterday and didn't mind the trigger at all, have shot some da revolvers in the past maybe that helped. Looking forward to getting more practice in.

I'll do some shooting first and then decide.
I'm used to shooting DA/SA so when I heard about the trigger and "one of the best mods" I thought it was a must.
I was able to pick up 120 rds today - 100 to plink and 20 sd. We have a gunshow tomorrow, but I have a feeling prices will be double of what they are at stores. If I have to go everyday they get a shipment and buy one box - it might take a while, but I'll have enough to shoot.
Also ordered a loader - it was tough loading past the tenth.
Thanks for the advice everyone!

I would highly recommend the Blackhawk CQC Serpa #25 for the M&P. I like the paddle style, it can be used both ways. You won't be sorry. I put the Apex kits in both and love it. I also put in the wide body take down plates in both from Galloway Precision and believe me Smith should have should thought of it. I am going to put Galloway's SS polished guide rod assembly with the stock recoil spring and that is all. I did put TUFF grips on all 3 semi's and for my grip, it is awesome. That's my nickel's worth. I love these guns. The 2 SD's and the one M&P are the same body size, weight, and feel. Good shooting!

I have a Fobus holster for my SW40 and love it. Rides nice and real secure.
