Neighbors behind me have two dogs. One is a little Pekingese and the other is some kind of bird dog.The dogs are kept outside 24/7 except during extreme cold temps and then they are only allowed in the garage. It might be terms of the rental agreement. The neighbors are nice people.I rarely saw them and only had a few conversations with them over the years.

The big dog used to howl every time a fire truck was heard with the sirens blaring. The howling was often late at night and very annoying. The owners did take care of the problem as soon as it was addressed with them. The Pekingese (called Pogo) just minded it's own business and followed the other dog around the yard.

Over the last couple of years when the weather got cold I would frequently hear the two dogs barking (sometimes whimpering) at the back door of their house.Their calls never got answered and they eventually stopped.I felt sorry for them that their owners never paid them much attention.Didn't seem to be much interaction with the dogs even when the weather was nice.

Here comes the point I'm trying to make.Last night I heard the dogs whimpering.Pogo was making most of the sounds but then the other dog would start up.This continued late into the night well past midnight and then eventually stopped.

I woke up this morning around 9am and looked out back to see if the squirrels were waiting for their daily feast of peanuts and PBJ on toast.I could see the big dog pacing back and forth from one side of their yard to the back door of the house whimpering as if something was wrong.

Something told me that something might be wrong so I went upstairs to get a better view of what was going on behind me.The woman came out to feed the dogs and stopped dead in her tracks.Pogo was lying in a corner of the yard and not moving. The woman called Pogo by name but there was no movement.I could see the other dog pacing back and forth. You could tell it sensed that something was wrong.

Tiny Pogo passed away some time in the middle of the night or early morning and was buried in the back yard with little or no fanfare. It seemed that both dogs were crying for help that never came.

I have never owned a dog but treat the neighborhood dogs with all the love and treats they can handle. You can't ask for more from a pet that wants nothing more than to please you.

Could little Pogo have been helped? We'll never know but it was sad to see that little guy pass away with no one around to comfort him.

You can have my mancard now...:(

That is a sad story.

Dogs are pack animals and just want to be part of the pack. I understand this as my dog is snoring away at my feet right now. I can't imagine leaving her outside 24/7.

Unfortunately, some people think that dogs are like toys. They only want to play with the dogs occasionally. Dogs don't work like that. They require attention all the time and need to be part of the family (pack). At least that's how I see it.

It was time to get another dog. Wifey went to the pound to pick one out. She picked another Shi-tzu. It was gonna be 2 days before we could pick him up. He needed to be de-nutified. The night of the neutering, it was cold for central Florida. Less than 50 degrees and the wind, she was a howling. Our pound is an open air affair. I couldn't sleep all night worrying about a dog I'd never even met. I couldn't even imagine being shivering cold with his maleness freshly removed wondering if he'd ever have someone to love again, if he ever did, he was pretty young, like weeks old, and picked up as stray. I made a promise that night that he would never be cold again. Three years later, I've kept that promise and I will to my dying day.

The story goes on, but I won't bore you with those details.

Some people have dogs still as working tools. While no sane person ever wants to see an animal suffer, please bear in mind that there are many dogs out there that exist to catch game, keep predators away from the house, and work cattle/land.

We do what is necessary to keep those dogs healthy, which means regular trips to the vet (my wife), but they aren't all inside dogs. They are a part of our pack with a job to do.

If your sole purpose for having a dog is to enjoy a little fluff ball that you treat like a surrogate child...nothing wrong with that at all. Please don't forget though that it is also a fact of life that some people still have to make a living with theirs.

owell past midnight and then eventually stopped.
as if something was wrong.

:(

I would argue that.

That's all fine and good. Nothing wrong there. However, those people that haveworking dogs.....actual working dogs......know what they're getting. The know the breads, their personalities, their traits, their needs. They won't buy a Chihuahua to herd sheep or pull a sled. Dogs were once bred for a job but today there are many different breeds for all sorts of things and not all breeds can handle certain situations. That little dog couldn't handle the cold. Of course not, it wasn't bred to be a Husky. This is where people need to first educate themselves on the type of dog before just going and buying one as a pet. I know my dog won't last outside in the cold. He can't and it's not his fault and I don't expect him to.

After we pick that ball of fur up we become responsible for the total care and feeder of that animal and in return he/she will give us its total devotion to our family and in some case's it would forfeit it's life for us to protect us
Too many times this isn't the case too many dogs are abused and tortured by sub-human people that really need a lesson in want it would feel like if they where treated like their dog...I had a rental house and unknown to me they had dogs I received a complaint from a neighbor about the number of dogs at my rental...so I started watching this house...to many dogs coming and going found out they where dog fighter's and these where training dogs that they had stolen the police caught them after I informed them happily they are locked up and will never miss treat a dog again

I'm sorry, but stories like that just make my blood boil.

As I write this, our border collie, a farm dog, is lying here at my feet. Yep, she's an outside dog....sort of. I mean, she's outside when I'm outside, which is a good part of the day. But when I come in around 2:00 for a nap, she figures that's a good time for her to take a nap, too. She follows me upstairs and flops down in her bed which is next to mine. When I pile into the truck to go to the post office, she goes with me.

While she has an outside kennel, I can't imagine leaving her in there 24/7. About the only time she's in there is when I have to do something like spray the noxious weeds in the pasture and I don't want that stuff on her paws.

She's my pal...my companion. When I feel like a gob of spit, she cheers me up. When the cares of the world start wearing me down, she helps me see the bright side of things. Why on earth would I want to have something like that locked up?

I can think of all sorts of things I'd like to do to pet owners like the OP mentioned, but it would probably get me banned from this forum for life.

I understand that...but responsible and humane owners of working animals (dogs, horses, etc) will insure that they have adequate shelter, food, water, etc. Clearly the little dog in question wasn't a working dog, nor was adequate shelter provided.

We have had dogs all of our married life...and they have been inside dogs, part of the family, and treated like family. In my experience, dogs are better people than most people.

Shasta looks pretty stressed out at the moment. On my office couch obviously in deep thought about the last stock trade we made earlier today. Poor thing... better give her something to relax her nerves. :D

Unfortunately, stories like the OP are all too common. I don't try to understand it. It's really beyond my comprehension how folks have such cold hearts concerning animals.

Wow I truly feel for you. We have an issuse with our neighbor. They are not nice folks all hardened crimenals theifs We found out after we bought. Its a very rual . These neighbor leave 12 dogs out 24\ 7 on chains and barely feed them . They bark all day or night. We have called animal control more times than you can count. In last year. This County will do zero for these animals. The owners being pure scum do nonthing to help them they let animals dtay out all on chains even with hurricanes. What got me the whorse these fools let a 4 year old tollder wander in their yard outside the day of the hurricane. We did call S O on that. They now are down to about 3 dogs all the others are dead. The one dog is pregnant now. Very sad.
