Have you turned your heat on yet?

For you wood burners have you burned the first fire yet? How do you handle the 'shoulder' seasons where it is not cold enough to run the wood burner all day or night but cold enough that some heat would be appreciated at times? Do you bother with short-term fires in the wood burner or just wait until it is cold enough for the more typical prolonged burns?

I've run the wood stove a couple of times now. Just start a quick fire in the evening, stoke it up and just let it go out. That gives us more than enough heat for the night and the next day if it is cool. We have run the hot air furnace a couple of times just to get the smell out of the duct work.

haha, our summer is just starting here in the Bay Area. We have an "indian summer" every year (is that still PC to say....). These next 6 weeks make living here worth it.

We have electric heat, a pellet stove, and two propane fireplaces.

We only use the electric heat in the lowest level when it gets below freezing, and only at 55° to keep pipes from freezing.

It's been damp and chilly so we've had the pellet stove on a couple of times now. While it wasn't cold enough to run the pellet stove last night, I ran the propane fireplace for an hour this morning until the sun came up.

No point in suffering. ;)

I just called my husband: He's got the pellet stove going now. :D

Fired up the wood stove just last night. Just had a cold front move in and it was in the upper 30's this morning. I like to burn that funky smell off the stove early in the season so the windows can be open.

In southern Oregon, btw.

Your better off with a couple of small fires at the beginning anyway. It gives the clay and brick a chance to give up the moisture that's leached into them slowly over the summer. Instead of going from 45 degrees to 275 degrees all at once. And yeah Wayne, if these temps continue this weekend will be our first. I've had the B/B heaters on for 20-30 minutes in the AM's this week. Corrine probably is doing the same at night.

Sir, we *tried* to turn the heat on during last week's cold snap, but the furnace wasn't having any of it. By the time we got that fixed, Indian Summer was back. (Naturally.)

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Funny you should ask. I just turned on the gas furnace a couple of hours ago. It was down to 61 inside the house. I have a 6 year old coming home soon, had to get it up at least to 68.

Yep, turned it on for the first time this morning. About five minutes later, the smoke detector system went berserk as it usually does the first time we start using the heat. I always forget to shut it off and today was no exception.

Leaves are all turned.. snow level is down to 1500 feet Heck yes the heat is on:p We do have fours seasons just like everybody. Ours are June July August and Winter:D

A saying I heard often from my Father 777!
He did WWII on Attu, Adak and Kiska. He said they had to shoo away the interlopers in order to have their shelter the first year! He also said it was the only place where it could snow, rain, be windy AND foggy, as well as sunny, all at the same time!

No heat yet, but did put the electric blanket on the bed today. Still need a little A/C during the day, but I'm beginning to get cold at night now.

We shipped 8 truck loads of cattle this morning and were supposed to round up 500 more this afternoon.

Came up a snow storm with 50 mph winds. We wimped out until Friday:(

You can bet I turned up the heater on the way home.
