Types of Grips

I am pretty new to the revolver world and often hear of different types of grips, boot style, combat, target, coke bottle (I think). Could someone help me out and post up pics of the different types. I have been looking for new ones for my 642 and my Model 19 (sb).

I don't have all of the different types mounted to show you but here are some I do have ready

Combat style-

Target style checkered-

Target style uncheckered-

Diamond Magna's-

Rubber combat style (Hogues)-

While not what people generally refer to when talking about cokes, these are coke style (palm swells)-

Diamond targets with football relief cut (for ejector clearance)-

Round butt combats with full speed loader cutout-

Western style (on a single action Freedom Arms)

The magna's look like what is on my model 19. I like the combat style, they look like they would fill your hand better.

Boot grips can be either combat (finger groove) or non combat. They generally fit flush to the bottom of the grip frame like the magnas do, to help hide the butt of the gun while concealed. They can be fitted to N, K/L, or J frames, but are most common on J frames.

It is a 681 with a seven shot cylinder and a PC barrel that I built. Her is another shot of it.

Thanks for the compliment. Others here have some really awesome collections of stocks/grips. I have a lot of others that are very nice, but generally of the same style as I posted. I just don't have pictures of all of them. You can go from styling, into types of wood used for the different styles, and within those styles. It gets pretty confusung until you stare at enough of them.



The roundbutt configuration on Smith revo's came out after the football style relief was dropped in favor of the speedloader cutout style, so I have never seen or heard of any football relief style on for a roundbutt style grip. I hope that made sense.

Chris - No, there are some early combat grips with the football relief.
Member "P35fan" offered some in the classifieds recently. Picture shown are square butt....

VM: P35fan's grips make me think I should get an N frame. Those grips are beauties, to say the least.

Wood Magnas. Rubber didn't start til 1994 on 19-7's

Hi,

Here's some serious "eye candy," for these stocks shown below REALLY dress up a revolver.


For show and for go, I'm steadily changing my grips to forum member Patrick Grashorn's (known here as "Executioner") fabulous American Elk Stags.

He makes 'em with the amount of bark you want, and in a thinner or thicker width if you prefer . . . and he makes 'em FAST . . . usually in just a few days. He also with photograph 'em and send you photos for your approval or suggestions!!!

Here are a few examples. This first ain't a K-frame like your M19 square butt, but it is a square butt and blued, as I assume your M-19 is:

and the same gun with the butt-ugly Hogue "rubbers." Big difference!

If your M19 is nickle-plated, here's a good example . . . on an M19 round butt.

Here's a J-frame (Model 37 Airweight) with it's original, serial-numbered-to-the-gun stock Magnas from 1971, which I really wanted to preserve . . .

And the same gun with Grashorn Gunworks stags. Wow! This is my ALWAYS on me CCW revolver.

Here's a 1964 nickle J-frame, again with original serial numbered stocks.

And with Grashorn Elk Stags, in a "family photo" . . .

BTW, these revolvers are all now wearing Tyler T-grips, which give the shooter a higher, more ergonomic grip on the gun . . . similar to the Hogue profile, and the Tylers truly lessen the felt recoil and keep the revolver from twisting in your grips during fast, double action shooting. They are also HIGHLY recommended with the Stags!
