Offered for sale: US Army Model 1917 plus original leather holster stamped "Property of U.S. P.O. Dept."
My dad purchased this set via mail order many years ago (maybe in the '50's?) when the U.S. Post Office was surplussing some of these revolvers. I recently learned from posting on this S&W Forum that "many passenger trains in the period 1900 to 1970 had a "Railway Post Office" car in their consist. The car was manned by Railway Mail Service clerks who were armed with revolvers similar to this one." Another contributor wrote that this gun was originally was built for military service during WWI. He said, "I believe your example was of wartime production and I suspect it was later transferred from the War Department to the P.O. Department for continued Federal service. It retains the lanyard swivel, which is a plus."
This contributor guessed the value could be in the range of $1000 to $1200, so I am asking $1000 or best offer.
