Well our wonderful 1993 Maytag has finally bit the dust! I am afraid the transmission is gone now and no telling what else. This has been the most trouble free machine we have had with the drive belt being the only thing changed since '93.
Now,unless the repair is worth it I need a new one:any suggestions for a quality machine?

Depends on how much you want to spend...........the front loading high effenciey washing machines can cost 1K or more...............as well as the do-it-all dryer which runs about the same as the washer. Then you have to have the pedestal for each one which is about buck and a half each. Question is, do you need the fancy ones, or will the mid-priced do what you all need to get done?

Since I am on a limited income I have limited what we can spend to roughly the $600 range, plus or minus a little. The machine has to be a top loader due to location and we could care less about something fancy. We just want something that will work and do that for some time!

My mom bought a top loader that does not have the center agitator, so it takes a large load like a front loader does. Cleans well and she is pleased with it.

I'll be going there in a short while for an errand, so I'll get you the brand/model.

As advertised, here's the info.

Whirlpool Cabrio.

She's very happy with it, but she did say it was probably over the budget you outlined.

Still, perhaps there's one in that series that does fall into your budget.

Good luck.

Thanks all for the help!I did look at the Cabrio and it was a bit pricey,at least for my budget!

I have learned that I do not need a washing machine that takes more programming than a Ballistic Missile.

Just the standard twist dial with regular, permenent press and delicate works just fine.

I do believe in buying a good brand name product.

Our Maytag is right at 20 years old. I cleaned out the pump once and replaced the door switch. That's it.
AND - It's EASY to work on :) The Sears washer that my wife had when I married her just flat wasn't!
If it ever breaks (I'm a knockin') it will be replaced by another Maytag.

I don't see what the problem is

Have had a Maytag for the last six years...yesterday it shot craps. Turns out the transmission was at fault and for $625.00 it could be replaced. I didn't pay that much for the washer new! So, we decided to replace it. Thought about an HE front loader but after more research decided on an HE top loader. We bought an LG...most all internet blogs spoke highly of it plus our refrigerator and dishwasher are LG's and we haven't had any problems with those. It was a little pricy but I'm hoping for the best...it gets delivered on Tuesday. I'll let you know.

I wanted to get a new washer, but I already have one that works perfectly- my wife. :D And one of these:

Maid Rite Family Size Galvanized Spiral Washboard

All joking aside, I'd see if there is a place around that sells used washers- preferably near a college or something, as those students that rent houses buy them once and then sell them to the used appliance dealer- the last washer I bought used nearly 20 years ago (maybe over 20 years ago!) and paid $15 for it- it's a Maytag. I expect they'd likely be nearly $100 now.

It might be your drive coupling. If you look under it and see a black pile of rubber crud its the coupling. Get the part # and hit Ebay. My Whirlpool of 15 years needed one and the part was $4.00. That and the door switch and its still running great.

When it dies I will get another top loader. The front loads look nice but my friends have had various problems with several different brands.

Maytag

We just bought a Maytag top load high efficiency and it does a great job and it's made in Ohio USA. LG"s are made in TIAWAN.

bought an "LG" about a year ago to replace our worn out washer. it is top quality and does a great job getting all the clothes and dirty gun cleaning rags clean.

Thanks everybody, gonna tear it down Monday and see what is needed.I hope the needed parts are not too much and it is worth the repair costs!
Andy,if I showed my wife that washer!!!:mad: ,well it's too cold to sleep outside!!!:D:D:D

I have to go along with the Maytag folks, the last one I had lasted over 20 years and was still working when we replaced it with another maytag. It is 6 years old now and going strong.

Whirlpool owns the Maytag name. Whirlpool owns Roper, Estate, Maytag, Admiral, Speed Queen, Amana, Caloric, Magic Chef, KitchenAid, Jenn Air and others.

Exactly. Maytag went "Tango Uniform" a few years ago when the latest incarnation of the Neptune series of washing machines were found to have a fatal defect. Some genius decided to make the tub-to-drive-shaft seal integral to the tub and nonreplaceable. Of course Murphy's Law reigned supreme and the seals were defective. Several hundred thousand units were affected and anyone experiencing leakage due to the tub seal was issued a $500 voucher. This bankrupted the company.
Whirlpool bought the rights to the name. By the way they also make the Sears Kenmore series.
We have the Whirlpool Estate Series Elite (110.28062800) and like it a lot. Top load High Efficiency and made in Clyde, Ohio. (The dryers are made in Marion, Ohio).
I recommend it any other washer made by Whirlpool.
