well, that was weird,I got hit by a deer..

I was on the way home from easter dinner at my parents, driving down the main road, stopped for a red light, and "THUMP".
something smacks into the side of the car,at first I thought it was the guy behind me, checked the rearview mirror..
He's too far back for it to be him..looked to my right and I see two deer standing about ten feet from me..
Now it's about 6 in the evening, still bright & sunny lots of traffic, and in the middle of town.
I'm looking at the deer wondering how they got so far back from the car, then slowly I see this deer head start to rise up in the window, it looked at me and turned and took off running with the other two in the other direction..
Strangest thing I ever saw...

Sir, that happened to my dad once, except the deer came in one side window of his Chevy Suburban, thrashed around in the back for a few seconds, then crashed through the other side window on the way out. Dad, naturally, was astonished by this and thought it a one-in-a-gazillion event. The bodyshop guys told Dad that it's unusual, but not unheard of; they usually see it at least once a year. Weird.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Moonman: Ohio needs the introduction of a few pumas ( or 'painters' as the old yankees used to call them) and wolf packs to keep the deer down.

I had a narrow escape myself once. I was driving home late one Connecticut winter night in a VW. There was a three mile long uphill stretch leading to my house, with a 90º curve at the bottom. My '56 VW had 36 thundering horses so I went into the curve very fast, hoping it wasn't too icy. As my headlights swept across the outside of the curve, I saw a huge buck stepping over the stone wall from an old orchard where he had been munching on fallen apples. He started to walk down the bank towards the road; I was already committed to the curve and couldn't do much about changing direction; it was all up to him. He took a couple of steps down the bank, and I was already wondering what damage he was going to do to me, as in a VW your feet are only a few inches behind the front fender. Then he though better of it and turned to walk up the bank. As I went whistling past (VWs of that era whistled; something to do with the fan), I heaved a great sigh of relief. I think I was all the way down to 2d gear when I got to the top of the hill.

Ive had one hit me on the side of the Ambulance 10 years ago. And then last week I came with in a foot of hitting one in the Fire truck.

Had about the same thing happen about 10 years ago on Thanksgiving Day. We were about 7 or 8 miles from home, on the way to the in-laws for dinner when one ran up out of the ditch and slid underneath our week-old Sable station wagon. Broke the deer's legs but fortunately did no damage to the car.

Yep PA Reb,
Make sure what you put in your car is inert (dead). Back in the late '50s two of my uncles had been out hunting a couple of miles from my parents house and found this nice, nice and at the time rare hornet nest. They stopped by the house and showed it to us and headed on home. Yep the nice warm car woke them up. Only took them 2 hours to get the car emptied of their new passengers.

The insurance guy said he had lots of claims for deer and elk hits, but never in 30 years had he heard of anyone hitting a bear.
Well, I can tell you that there are at least two of us in that club.

My Dad loved to tell this story on a Brother-in-Law; The BiL came to Nevada to hunt Mule Deer for the first time. They headed out of camp the first morn only to jump a large buck out of a thicket. The BiL shot and down the buck went. He ran up and placed a nice Winchester M 70 across the horns and backed off for a picture. About the time the BiL was framing the picture the buck came too and jumped up. Some what wobbly, the buck started to leave. My Dad then shot the buck and saved the BiL's rifle. The BiL thanked my Dad, but my Dad said, "For What?" That Buck just gave me a rifle! ......... Big Cholla

My wife has had 2 deer run into the side of her car.

One was a big mulie in South Dakota that was a bit late chasing the girls and ran into her passenger door after she stopped to let the does run past. It shook its head and looked in the car as if asking, " Where the heck did YOU come from??".

The next time was a couple months ago when a whitetail buck head-butted her front left fender, breaking the left turn signal and cracking the headlight cover. Same reaction from both deer and wife....

"Where did you come from??/Oh, darn.. not again!!"
