Went to look for a M&P 340, ran across a slightly used M&P 342 (had never heard of this model before). The 342 had some trigger improvement work and looked to be in excellent condition. Should I consider this as an option? Or should I keep looking?

Thanks!!!!

I guess it depends how badly you want a 357. I think a 38 special is adequate enough for self defense. My edc is a 342 airlite. The most popular j frames are the 642, 442, 638, 638 etc. All 38 specials.
So I say yes, it's a very viable option for self defense and should be considered, but it's up to you. If you have your heart set on a 357, don't settle. If you're open to other cartridges and it's a good deal, get it.

I recently compared a M&P 340, 340PD and a 638 (which I own) side by side. I love the sights on the M&P 340, but there was not enough of a weight difference to justify the cost (barely noticeable when held side by side with the 638). The 340PD was crazy light!.

Since I have no desire to shoot .357 in one of these, I am purchasing a lightly used 342PD (even lighter than the 340PD) which already has Crimson Trace 405 grips and a Big Dot front sight installed.

I'd examine the front of the cylinder on the 342 closely to see if the previous owner cleaned the titanium cylinder incorrectly, removing the protective finish leading to erosion. I think this is more of a problem on the .357 guns than the .38's.

I enjoy carrying my 638 in the front pocket of my jeans, but hope the 342 will improve front pocket carry when wearing shorts.
