Hello all- decided to start looking into a birth year model 10 for myself. What should I be looking for to ensure it’s a 1965 gun? Serial number range and - number. What models were available? I think a nice 4” pencil barrel would do well but what other options were around? I’m not a collector so I come to you guys with the knowledge to make sure I get it right. Thanks for the help.

Looking at a LoA that states that a Model 10-5 with a tapered barrel S/N C 718757 was shipped from S&W on January 22, 1965. LoA's don't tell you when a handgun was made; rather, when S&W shipped it. Like in this case, for example, it could have been made in December 1964. HTH.

10-5 tapered barrel or 10-6 heavy barrel.

This thread need some pics.

I'm not sure what 'dash' these are, but here's what is meant by a tapered barrel versus a heavy barrel.

Personally, I like the 2" K-frame, but the heavy barrel 4 inch is a pleasure to shoot.

L-R: tapered, tapered, heavy, snub.

What a nice collection! I think a blued, tapered barrel is what I’m leaning towards. Thank you!

Thanks and you're welcome. They were my fathers.

I just checked my records. These are all 1968, 1968, 1969, and 1979. The 4" tapered blue 10-5 is from 1968 and U.S. marked. That one's NSF for now.

Maybe not the most popular S&W revolver but, probably the most carried duty sidearm. The tapered 4" was my F-I-L's with the box and factory cleaning rod but, without the documents. He acquired it from York Arms on Summer Ave. in Memphis, TN.

York Arms was that "special" sporting goods store of yesterday.

My friend and client, who owned a pawnshop, set the 2" back for me. No box or docs but, 95% condition or better. He gave me "friends and family" discount.

Both shoot, as you would expect, to the point of aim. Both are 10-5 editions.
