What Do You Feed Your Dog?

Purina Pro Plan lamb and rice variety plus whatever he scrounges in the field once in awhile...........like field mice. Sam is a 12 YO English Setter............his points on pheasants were rock solid and would retrieve to hand. He and I don't hunt birds anymore............we're both too old.

Luckily the cat litter box is in the basement or you could add "fudgecicles" to the menu.

As per the holistic vet's orders :
1/2 Blue Buffalo
1/4 cooked ground beef
1/4 cooked sweet potatoes

First trip to the holistic vet she told me how Gunter, based on his personality, is an earth dog and with earth dogs all things flow from the center. She then did acupuncture and chiropractic treatments. I left feeling like I'd spent $200 to have someone sacrifice a chicken over my dog. I'll be damned if the next day he wasn't walking without a limp. We did those treatments for 2 years until we started to see diminishing returns. Then we went to painkillers. We're now getting to the point where they aren't working.
It's going to be one very sad day when I have to have him put down.

We give our Shiba Inu a relatively high protein kibble with no by-products (Wegman's Simply From Nature). She loves it (well, TBH, she loves any food you'll offer her ), and the best part of feeding your dog a high quality kibble is that you don't need to give them as much.

Those "bones and raw food" types can be real nutters, though. Some of them feel that feeding your dog even expensive, super premium kibble is like giving them poison.

Mainly dry food with low salt chicken stock and whatever chopped up meat leftovers we have boiled down to stock. I fill my Jack Russels food with green beans. Fills her up with no down side.
For snacks we slice sweet potatoes and dehydrate them into chips. They Love them and no downside to them either. Plus they're cheap!

She gets 2 cups in am and 2in pm of Merck grain free Pacific Catch also 1tablespoon of glucosamine at each feeding. 100# female shepherd named Kenna. If we gave her milk Id be doing poop patrol with a hose!

I feed my beagle sammie cooked chicken and rice with French cut string beans daily.He also has a supply of dry Taste of the Wild grain free whenever he wants it.

Dog Chow

In the last 45ears I have fed not but Purina Dog Chow. I have a bowl out 24-7. If I haven't raised a dog from a puppy sometimes it takes a while for them to get used to but normally not long. Everything from Bichon's to Shepherds. Never had fat of sick dogs. I have had a couple that didn't like dry food at first but when they figured out that was all they would get they started to like it.

My Brittany, Annie, loves a rabbit now and then. If they choose the long way out of the yard there is no way out.

I spoil my dog. I buy two packs of boneless frozen chicken thighs. I take two out and Foreman grill them along with Kirkland brand dry food for mature dogs. Then I add a made in USA chicken jerky strip, happy hip treat (2000 mil glucosimine) and something for dental cleaning treat. She eats better than I do.

MY BRITTANY'S

HER 36#, HIM 41#, have been on a self feed of kibble and water, with 1/2 can of meat until 6 months then kibble only. since 8 weeks old. They never over eat and share the bowl without any fights & they never completely empty the bowl all at once. It is a much easier method for 2 people each working 2 jobs where hours/shifts can change a lot. Just keep food & water in the bowls & no set time you have to be home for. No problem to take something from their mouth. They have never been over weight. Now on daily prednisone they eat like they have 2 poopers! 1-40 lb bag/month - 5 weeks, of blue buffalo senior no grain for allergic type skins (whatever) app 60$ @ pet supermarket, the 11th bag is free. Since the wife looked up what animal by products were comprised of, it was "only the best". Then my little girl goes out in the yard & eats her own biscuits! I keep telling her I could get that for free. Feeding them scraps from the table my wife has turned them into world class beggars, but when they rest their head on your lap and stare into your eyes, they are hard to resist. Moms the soft touch and don't they know it.

All three of our dogs, ranging in age from 8 months to 8 years, are on Canidade Life Stages. They get a few small sized Milk Bones during the day when they come in after running outside, and they each get a bite of whatever meat I save from my Supper as a special treat. They also seem to like to snack on horse apples whenever the mood strikes.

My English Setters get Kirkland's Premium Chicken, Rice & Veggy formula.

During hunting season when they get worked hard I up the amount and add some animal fats to up their calorie count. A few times a week I add some Greek Yogurt to their kibble and maybe some really cheap canned tuna fish. This regiment seems to keep them in good hunting condition when working hard day after day.

I have a freezer in the barn for offal I get from a game/meat processor here locally. My Anatolians eat that pretty much exclusively. They are not picky, nor pampered and are exceedingly healthy. I supplement the female with some vitamin treats when she's pregnant or nursing.

Ricky our JRT has a seat at the table next to the wife. He eats what we eat mostly. A bag of Iams last quite awhile.

My pal Ice, pictured in my avatar, eats only dry dog food, served in a self feeder. He is a hard working waterfowl retriever, hunting about 50 days a year. He retrieved over 300 birds this season. You can see from his picture that he stays in great shape and is very happy with his job.

I was surprised how far down the Dog Food review list Purina Pro Plan was. I've fed that for years. I changed from Diamond brand after their moldy corn disaster.
