What do you like best about your home state?

Well its really hard to say much good about NYS.

Parts of it like the Catskills and the Adirondacks where I live are beautiful any time of the year. The leaf season here is winding down as I type this.

That and for the cars guys (gear heads) NY does allow 8 spaces for vanity plates. Most states allow less, some much less.

I know that is not much nice to say about the state you are a subject of, but I tried.

45 minutes drive puts me on the Pacific coast, about two hour in the opposite direction at the foot of a glacier. A couple hours more, and I'm in the high desert. No drawing for deer and elk tags. Best beer in the country, second-best wine. Despite its liberal reputation, Oregon has always had open carry, and we became shall-issue in the late 1980s, a decade or more before most other states really knew what that was.

And until the Great Cascadia Subduction Quake and Tsunami wipes us all out, Mother Nature is really nice to us. Blizzards, hurricanes, real tornadoes, breaking levees, all stuff that happens to other parts of the country. Here, a branch falling on a power line forcing folks to sit in the dark for a few hours qualifies as a natural disaster.

I like traveling elsewhere. Some months ago we had a great time and met some fantastic folks in Tennessee and Kentucky, for example. But for year-round living, no place but this will do.

Being in the minority by living in the Empire state, I gotta say that despite its "nanny state" laws, it's a great place to live. I grew up in the Syracuse area, semi rural, lots of fields and woods to wander in, all gone now.
I learned to fish on the St. Lawrence during bass season from 8 yo till in my teens, father, grandfather, his fishing buds and my uncle. Dad taught us to shoot in an old quarry with a Winchester single shot 22 that my son still has.
Lived in a lot of towns since then, did spend two years in NJ courtesy of Uncle Sam, but Buffalo, Brockport, Hamlin, Fulton, Oswego, Massena, Norfolk, Chase Mills, Waddington, and Ogdensburg have all been homes for me. Ogdensburg is hopefully my last stop. A quarter mile off the St. Lawrence, an hour to the Adirondacks,(great trout fishing), less than 2 hours to Syracuse, life is all good.
Outside of crooked politicians, the downstate voter majority, and 100 degree days in the summer, I like it here and wouldn't move out. Winters are cold as a well diggers backside, but spring and fall are beautiful and summer is great motorcycle riding, what's not to like?

And right down the road......

EVERYTHING!

I LOVE Nashville! It's the Music And Party City. All the New restaurants, the clubs, Hottest spot in the US! Nashville Is BOOMING!

And 3 1/2 hours east I can be in the Smokie Mountains. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Or Choo Choo city, good ole Look Out Mountain Chattanooga.

3 1/2 hours west, I can be in Memphis or Germantown Tn. Or a little north west be in the beautiful Land Between The Lakes state parks. Or Reelfoot Lake, nature at its finest.

One and half hour south I can be in the great state of Alabama or a hour and half north I can be in the beautiful state of Kentucky.

So, Great music, moonshine, Bar B Que, Nashville Original Hot Chicken, Fantastic state wide hunting and fishing, for us racing fans there's Bristol Raceway or Memphis Motor Sports Park.

What's NOT To LOVE About the Great State Of TENNESSEE?

And right down the road there is Bucksnort, TN.

Having relocated several times during my working days I found a lot of things to appreciate in the states I lived, particularly the much maligned state of California.

What I like best is the rural areas of Tennessee, from the Smoky Mountains to the Tennessee River. Gun friendly and a motorcycle rider's paradise. Government generally keeps off your back compared to some places I've lived, including no income taxes.

Unfortunately, Chattanooga has changed quite a lot since the VW plant moved in. I pretty much hate Chattanooga now. Traffic reminds me of when I lived in the bay area California and so does the freak show of humanity that has relocated here pursuing jobs at VW. I'll likely soon be moving from this once peaceful wonderful lifestyle that has turned to garbage...

Home State is Ohio. Home of friendly people, good food, Family and Friends. Birthplace of Aviation ( Take that North Caroline - You just happened to have a lot of wind), Mother of seven Presidents, and the OGCA.

But the best thing about it is that it is NOT Illinois where I am reluctantly residing at the moment.

What do I love about Georgia?

NOTHING!

HORRIBLE State.
I would not recommend that anyone should ever move here.
We're mostly a bunch of illiterate, inbred knuckle draggers.
No good jobs unless you know a lot about plowing with mules.
Very few dentists, and most of the ones we have are real mediocre barbers. ;)

If you Northeners are hunting a haven in the sunny South, I heartily recommend Alabama, Mississippi, or Louisiana. They are WONDERFUL states.

If you must move to Georgia, I'd suggest living in Atlanta- preferably inside the city limits. Wonderful city!

I hope this helps.

Wyoming.

NYS is actually quite beautiful. We have great vistas. There is abundant wildlife and fishing. We have great lakes, waterways and the ocean. 2 mountain ranges and lush valleys. There are metropolitan regions and very rural areas. We can attack Canada from several spots. The people (at least in my parts) are extremely nice.

That said, I can't wait to get the hell out! I think Georgia. My teeth are good, I never was much into haircuts. My wife can pull a plow and maybe I can help educate the locals on the ways of the north.

Thanks, I totally forgot about being able to attack Canada as a positive. Course you really only need 1 location to do the job.:D

4011, doggone it, you beat me to it. I've seen a lot of this country, and I like a lot of it, even parts of most cities. I'd like parts of every state. But the thing I like most about home, is that it's Texas. It's not perfect, it's too hot, and it's too close to Mexico, but at least we don't own snow removal equipment.

ahhh yes, snow removal. Nice not wearing snake chaps when you're shoveling though. Or knocking creepy crawlies out of your snow boots before putting them on.

What I like best about California are the earthquake faults. The old California of my childhood is long gone having been replaced by The People's Republic of California controlled by the wack jobs in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Los Angeles Area. I'm hoping that a big earthquake hits and that San Francisco and Los Angeles sink into the ocean, never to be seen again.

............and maybe I can help educate the locals on the ways of the north.
Too late.
Done been did. Northerners were NEVER bashful 'bout tellin' us how they did it better back home. 100% of them in my experience. ;)
I gently suggest they might be happier back home where it was done better.
We're blissfully ignorant, and un-savable. :p:p

Wow! Hoping for the death of 40 million people. Interesting .....

My native state is Tennessee. I love the Smokies, the grand old TVA lakes and the history, particularly that from the Civil War.

My adopted home state is Kentucky. I love the eastern mountains, and the fact that we have more miles of flowing water than any state but Alaska and some wonderful lake fishing. I especially like the fact that we are one of the most gun-friendly states in the Union--shall-issue, castle-doctrine, stand-your-ground, legal-open-carry state.

I like the friendly culture and people in both states, and some mighty fine cooking is done on both sides of the state line.

Pa has 4 distinct seasons, lots of lush green hills, tons of lakes and rivers, and not far to the beach or mountains. Few deadly predators in the woods, and we can carry just about anywhere. Pittsburgh has all of this, AND its over 300 miles from Philadelphia and Jersey. :)

I live in the mountains of East Tennessee.. I spend a lot of time in both Western North Carolina and North Georgia. So, I guess my "home state" doesn't really have a state line?

Mark Williams is a good friend who loves nature and he is a great videographer! He made a video on the Cullasaja River over here in NC... thought some of you might like to see it?

God's Country.. and one of the rivers that run through it...

My current home state of Indiana, pretty much nothing except I have friends here. My former home state of Ohio has a lot going for it - good gun laws, lots of places to shoot, winters are mild n the SW part.

Wisconsin, where most of the family is now, is nice in spite of the harsh winters. Summers are mild, not quite as gun friendly as Ohio but I have had no trouble getting reloading supplies. Get away from Milwaukee and ethanol free gas is easy to find.

I grew up in Illinois, I wouldn't be opposed to going back. I have no desire to move back to Maryland.
