What do you miss these days?

Of all the things I miss, it's my mind I miss the most. That followed by my eyesight. Had exceptionally sharp, long & close range vision in my youth. Not so much anymore.

Actually, the thread brings back lots of memories. Surprising in some ways how many similar, pleasant childhood memories we all share.

I do sometimes wonder however if these memories of the past, soft drinks, candy, foods, and childhood activities were really that much better or just polished and embellished by our imaginations over time.

Speaking of Cokes and "sodas" in general - we had a "gas station" about a block from where we lived. They had the glass bottles of soda stored in a rectangular cooler with cooled (refrigerated) water up to the neck. To buy one, you deposited your nickel or dime and slid the bootle of choice along the metal tracks that held them in place until you reached the end where you pulled it out to complete the purchase. I usually got an orange (being about 7-12 yrs old) but on occasion I pulled a "Moxie" to show I was a "man" and could drink a bitter tasting soft drink. You opened them with an opener mounted to the front.

A nickel bag of chips made everything perfect. Bad eating habits continue to this day :D

Sodas from these machines were free, if you brought your own church key and a straw...

A drive in movie, cute date, bucket of beer, and a muscle car with bench seats. Nothing else was important.;)

:D :D Someone else knows the drill! :D Worse still, most of the young'uns don't even know what the church key is. My employer died 4 years ago at 97. When we cleaned out his junk, I found an old coffee cup with a dozen of them. My boss said "toss them out". I'm out, so I tossed them to my desk, then home. The hot ticket was to bend the church key in the middle so it easily had clearance when you opened the bottle. One of my buddies even took it a step beyond. He took a funnel and a quart jug, just to make sure he got it all. :)

And I remember the first pull tab cans of beer, the ones with a top and a bottom, not an extruded can with a rounded bottom. The drill was after a few adult beverages was to get more for the guys. Then pick your pidgeon and hand him the one upside down. With the cute little triangular fang marks already in the bottom. The younger guys would just figure it was how you got it out of the ice chest (remember those?). Their first instinct was to turn it right side up, dumping a few ounces on their lap before they realized they'd been had. :D

And I agree with the above poster. Of all the things I miss, I miss my mind the most.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned their hair.

We used black electrical tape to repair the balls that we ripped the covers off from overuse! Cracked bats got a couple of screws put into them and then got the tape treatment.

Yup. We made it do, made it last, or made it ourselves. No chucking something out when it was just a bit worn and buying a new one.

I miss 8oz beers. Just the ticket for these hot southern summers. larger beers get hot before you finish them.

I remember the little taverns in Kansas serving them in juice glasses. Two bits. An extra nickel if you wanted tomato juice in it.

I miss getting dressed up to go fly somewhere, actually enjoying the experience without all of today's ineffective "security theater".

OK, being from Michigan and with the passing of Ernie yesterday. I miss sitting on the picnic table on our back patio with all the neighbors watching the Tigers play on TV.
I also miss having a professional sports team from Detroit that we could be proud of.
Oh yeah - REAL Saturday morning cartoons! "Rabbit season...Duck Season....Rabbit....Duck....BANG!"

I miss sittin' with my feet hangin' in the grease pit of a Texaco station in Chugwater Wyoming after a 3 day cattle drive. The thrill of drinkin' a beer at 15 years old with my Dad and the other cowboys knowing that the owner of the station was also a Deputy Sheriff. The town din't have a bar, still don't, and that gas station was the first shade we had seen in quite a while and that cold beer cut the dust better than anything else. The Deputy figgered if I was drinkin' with my Dad in his office it was OK with him.

I also miss huggin' and kissin' purty girls,..... what was that other thing we use to do? .:(
