Anybody else notice the relative dearth of this fine semi from most of the forums and also GB? It's not that thet are so expensive when found, there just don't seem to be many for sale? Has this common S&W developed a cult, or something?

1) People who own them don't sell them very often!
2) When they do show up for sale, they are grabbed quickly.

There's a recent thread about someone's newly acquired 6906. The one he bought is a re-import from Israel. If you find that thread, there might be some information on how many were brought in and are for sale.

I still see quite a few questions about them on the forum....most of the users and buyers really like them.
The LE trade in's and such are available most of the time. I think the reason you don't see many for sale is because when someone purchases one, they like them, and tend to hold on to them.

No question that it's a very popular model. :) I already own two of them. :D It's the Glock 19 of S&W 3rd Gens... a gun that feels good in the hand and does everything well. :)

They still appear fairly regularly in my area. I wouldn't say there are a whole lot of them, but they are certainly easier to find than the big-framed .45's and 10mm's.

If I were S&W, I'd sue you for that slanderous comparison. ;)

Then again, S&W has abandoned their all metal guns unless they are revolvers or use a 114 year old design. :(

?? There are a couple dozen on GB right now, half of them available as a simple sale or Buy Now for well under $400. Seems like pretty fair availability to me,.......I'm always looking for models that infrequently pop up one or two at a time.

I have seen a lot on auction sights prices don't seem that bad to me.

That was me. I bought it from IAMMO.com and they still have some in stock for $359 plus shipping. It was in pretty good condition, but it does have re-import marks on the underside of the frame. Another 3rd gen enthusiast posted a pic of one with the re-import markings on the thread I started.

I was going to make the same comment - now IMNSHO an awful lot of the GB guns are beat-to-hell-looking on the frames. Presumably a ton of LE trade-ins with the expected holster wear and thrown-down-the-driveway finish treatment.

IMO, start looking there and get a feel for what conditions bring which prices and set a price point for what you want, then bid on those of high enough quality until you get one :)

I got a June '93 example (3rd series/generation) with 98-99% frame finish, excellent slide finish, and pristine-looking internals with one LE-marked magazine, and a mismatched box & fired cartridge for $350, so it can be done.

As others have noted, Midway has 12-rd mags on sale/clearance for $24.xx, so you can stock up now :D

Great guns! I have a former California DOC (CDC) Square Trigger 6906. I have done a few things to her, but she's remarkably clean. She's also a very good shooter.

With the magazines, I change out the finger rest magazine base plates for the normal 5906 base plates. It helps with concealment and still keeps the shootability factor intact.

On the refresh magazine, I use the Hogue #5900 aluminium base plate. It works great!

Be patient. I looked around for quite some time for a nice one to go with my 6904's, and last spring I picked up an unfired training 6906 for just over three fifty, then less than two weeks later picked up another for three hundred OTD, in excellent condition. They're out there, it seems like they just show up when you stop looking thinking about 'em.

I sold mine a few months back on AL for $550....but it was as new in correct box,4 mags.hogue finger groove grip and a new never installed factory grip.........both of my holsters that I use my 3913NL worked with the 6906 but I was hesitant to carry it because it was so pristine.......my LGS has some beaters for just north of $300 so I will carry guilt free;)......I just regret not keeping 2 of those mags:(
