What is the PD in "N.P.D.?"

I have two 6946's from NPD (Gander Mtn this last Dec.) and one from FRPD (Fall River, MA I think) bought a while back. All 3 shoot great. The NPD's had tired Hogue grips (replaced with new factory grips) and were scuffed up a bit but polished up right nice.

What did you use to polish them? I'm gonna try and do the same thing... any pics?

I used Mothers mag polish on the entire gun. Took that "yellow stain" look away on the frame. Spiffed up the slides real nice. Most effort was on the sides of the slides to keep the glare down from the sight areas.
Also, there appears to be at least 2 different NPD stamping styles.
DonZ's pic shows N.P.D (space) XXXX type while both of my 6946's show: NPDXXX style. Could be from 2 different batches or 2 different police depts.?
I am new enough that I haven't figured out how to post pics yet. Will have to work on that.

One of my 3953's is also stamped N.P.D. xxxx I think. Got that one from a private party and is at the gunsmith's getting fixed.

Hmm.... okay, so either they're guessing, or making stuff up, or they bought different batches of the same model from two different agencies that use the same acronym. Take your pick. :)

As the OP, it should probably be me who gets his pistol papered to find out once and for all what N.P.D. stands for.

If somebody would send me a link to get started, I'll foot the bill. Can't seem to find the info on the S&W web site.

Very commendable! ;)

Use the pdf. version linked here:

On the Gander mountain website their NPD marked 6946's were:

"According to Smith & Wesson Historian Roy G. Jinks the gun that I bought, that was marked with N.P.D , was sent to the Newark Police Academy, Firearms Training Unit Newark, NJ."

I emailed the Newark Police Division (formerly Department) and asked the Media and Public Information Officer if these were from Newark. He in turn asked me the number on mine. The Range Officer told him that my number fits in with the ones they had, but he cannot guarantee that it came from his organization since there are other N.P.D.'s.

But at least this told me that Newark P.D. had 3913's -- I think the likelihood is high that they are the source of the pistols that recently hit the market.

I have a MPD marked 3953 and it is from the Memphis Police Department. (Also engraved with "First Edition & the Memphis PD crest)

I have a 39-2 marked MPD C-188 but I wish it had been stamped as neatly as those NPD pistols. Mine is electro-penciled and none too neatly.

Here's a pic.

That's a pretty rough way of identifying a department pistol. My first thought seeing it was that it is a way of identifying the pistol as evidence or recovered property. Lots of departments could care less about how they mark recovered property/evidence as it isn't "their" property.
