What keeps you awake at night?

I have recurring nightmares that I'm called back to active duty and no one will issue me ACUs so they all gripe when I show up in BDUs. Or I dream that thye recall me and everyone is upset because I'm fat and I wake telling them I didn't ask to come back so you're just gonna have to deal with the fact that I'm fat.

Lentils... lentils are bad news. Actually, on a more serious note, Claritin gave me horrible nightmares. I couldn't sleep, gained about 50lbs, and felt terrible with it. Took a couple of weeks to get away from the side effects after stopping it, but finally am getting back to normal.

I have Arthritis in my knee's and hip's which makes getting asleep tough, I got up at 3:30 am for years, I have been retired for 10 years and I still wake up at 3:30, the good part is I now go fishing instead of work.:D

I want to thank you all for your comments. I too suffer from the enlarged prostate and full bladder syndrome. I have arithrits but is pretty well managed with the medication. I have been off the trazodone a couple times for several months at a time but the dreams continue. The dreams are not every night once or twice a week but certain times of the years they occur nightly. I am a retired social worker and addiction counselor. I have been to counseling and a PTSD support group. The counseling and the group helped with a lot of issues but not the dream or sleep issues. I have tried the newer sleep meds and there side effects caused problems during the day. I have tried the teas and natural herbs with little help. I have tried water beds, the sleep number and that foam bed and all I get is nice mattress for the guest rooms. After I retired sleeping did improve a lot . But the dreams still haunt me. Thanks for reading. Sometimes you just need to vent.

On the serious side. I use a pill called sleep aide from Costco. Also start doing some exercise during the day. Start simple. This will help you relax all over. Don't eat heavy meals after about six. Do the simple exercise several times. I do some befor bed. I have had two back surgeries and wake up stiff in the mid back area. I use a small massager to relax those muscles before getting up. If I'm having trouble sleeping I use the massager to relax the neck shoulder and back. I suggest you try a different medication. The poster that said to try the Christian station has a point. I had the dish and they had a great station to listen to. Left it on all day and night. Can we give you proof it works no. Darn sure can't hurt nothing. Wish you a good nights sleep.

I'm not a full night sleeper and haven't been for years. It usually just the thought of the upcoming day and things to accomplish, etc. I consider a good night sleep to be 5-6 hours and only having to pee once!:o

Since my kids have gotten older and keep ridiculously late night hours (like I did), it's worrying about them. I don't hit full blown slumber until I see headlights from them coming up the driveway or hear them milling around the house.

I've had trouble getting to sleep all my life. I'm only 48, and in perfect health. A few years ago somebody told me about Melatonin. I tried it, and it helps you stay asleep, or go back to sleep if you wake up. It does have one side effect, though. The dreams you have are vivid! Kinda like going to a movie every night.
I take that and Dyphenhydramine every night. That is basically the same thing as an anti-hystamine. This combo works for me.
That and listening to Missus P&R Fan sleeping soundly next to me. Takes her about a minute.

I too have nightmares often, they started when I was young an didn't subside until (now hear me out) I started to do Yoga haha. It helps me relax and clears my mind, I can tell on the days I run out of time and don't do it, I don't sleep as well.

In my sleep... I normally hear somebody else screamin'... it is a mournful wail like no other. Wake up... all the time. I can't do anything about it... it is something that I deserve.

^..^

Carpriver, be careful with the sleep meds.

Ambien especially. If you get the urge to nap, fight it, so you will welcome a good nights rest.

For me, my job keeps me up. I have been working on a very large project for a year. My deadline is Feb. 2014, it's getting closer fast.

I have a crew of 7 who work for me and they can see the stress I'm under. I have been bringing my work home and working an additional 8-10 hours a weekend, trying to catch up.

Come heck or high water, I will finish the task. Or, they will fire me.

Dang, thanks for all the inputs.

I'll stop being upset because I can't get 7 to 8 hours sleep straight!

I tried "sleeping pills" and felt terrible the next day.

So, when I wake up at night I turn on my TV - volume low and prop myself up on pillows..............before long I'm gone!!

I was always a very sound sleeper until I spent a week in the hospital in 2000 where the nurse(s) woke me every hour to "check my vitals".............haven't been a sound sleeper since!!

But I'm coming up on 76 in a couple of months so I should just be glad I'm still here to complain!!

When I quit smoking I used the patch and let me tell you it was like taking acid (don't ask how I know) before going to bed.

For the last two years I have had a job where I'm outside all day long and I walk around 7-8 miles a day. By bedtime I'm done I have no problem falling asleep

Job stress keeps me awake. That and east coast to west coast trips...I finally went to the Doctor and got 5mg Zolpidem...what I find is that 20 tabs last me about 2 months or so...gives me about 6 hours of decent sleep, kinda turns my brain off so I don't think about things that keep me awake....haven't found it to be habit forming...good luck..not sleeping well is a B**ch!

I sleep real well nowdays, if I don't drink coffee after noon, but for over 35 years I had a reoccurring nightmare. Once I stopped drinking, it went away.(near 10 yrs)...never went to a shrink even though it was suggested.
Maybe I should've. I drink a warm mug of milk, too.
