I have had trouble sleeping for since my twenty's. It takes forever to fall asleep and then I can't stay asleep. I have nightmares that wake me up screaming. I am 65 years old now and have been taking Trazodone : which is a very old anti depressant for years to help me get to sleep. Nothing seems to stop the nightmares.

My doctor wants me to go see the shrinks at the VA. Not sure I want to have those guys poking around in my head, and losing my right to own a firearm.

So what keeps you awake at night?

Gout. About twice a year. Just had it this weekend. Gout is pure unadulterated pain in it's extreme. And I've always been a guy who felt I could tolerate pain to a pretty high level. Gout will really test you. And because of surgery coming up, I had to deal with it without anti inflammatory medication which I have right there on the counter.

My wife had this problem for several years. Finally went to the family doc about it. He told her to take a 3 mg melatonin tablet every night. It's a non-prescription supplement, non-addictive, and so safe he gives it to his children.

She tried it and it really works. Good luck.

I tried the Trazodone for one night and it set my head on fire and I did not try it again. I can cut a 5mg Zolpidem (generic Ambien) in half and rest just fine but sometimes have some pretty good nightmares also. The Zolpidem is a sedative and is addictive also. I think regardless of what you use for rest it causes wild dreams and nightmares. I am 72 years old and don't exert myself in a job like I used to and I think that has a lot to do with it.

I am not taking anything lately to help me sleep but might look into the Melatonin that has been mentioned.

Maybe we need a strenuous regimen of exercise including walking and working so we will be a lot more tired when we go to bed.

I sleep better now since I'm retired since I have less to worry about. When I was working I worried about everything and was awake a lot. I finally quit worrying about it or taking drugs to deal with it and got up and looked at computer forums or read the paper. Soon enough I went back to bed and didn't count the hours only the restful ones.

I can remember my Grandmother would always go to bed with a Sunday school lesson pamphlet or other religious material under her pillow every night. She said it would prevent having nightmares.

Melatonin is one of the best herbs for sleep. Taken an hour before bed seems to work well.

I know a herb that will help gout, as well as give you a peaceful night's sleep, it's the "King of Herbs"... but is legal in only 20 states.

I have no trouble getting shut eye.

But I do remember when dating Samantha about 30 years ago, she kept me up all night and I couldn't sleep.

My family always said that if sleeping were an Olympic sport they could give me the gold before lights out. These days I occasionally (2-3 times a year) take a Simply Sleep or half a Benadryl if I am wound up and unable to sleep.

This Samantha, did she have a sister called Kim?:D:D:D

Carpriver, you should try and get off the sleep meds entirely as now they may be inducing your nightmares. My late wife was put on Ambien which led to late night sessions where she would rearrange all her jewelry into various snack bags. Connie's symptoms were mild compared with her physio's who had done the full cake baking and driving routine while asleep when using Ambien.

Since I got over my prostate cancer and lost 60lbs. I'm sleeping much better because I'm taking less meds now. I can't wait to lose another 60/100lbs and get off all the meds that's my goal. I went to my son's weeding in a tux for the first time I was in a penguin suit and it felt dam good to dress up. I been a tee shirt and jeans guy for most of my life. I went out and purchase all new clothes.

I fall asleep listing to Lisa, Celtic music on Pandora with my kindle fire HD every night. Tis the music of angels put here on earth by God.

I am finally starting to sleep good but I do use a C Pap machine for sleep apnea. I can breath better now with the weight loss.

I'm at peace with God and my family now too. Nothing bothers me anymore I don't sweat the stuff I can't change but I do fix the little problems. I enjoy my wife, kids and grandson now more than ever.

I have no clue why my dad never gave my kids any attention. How can you not? These children are our blood. That little grandson gives me that look I melt. I'd buy him anything he wants.

Sleeping good comes from having peace of mind with God and family.

There is no love and respect for each other in today's world that's the problem. God bless. Bigbill

Also checkout the side effects with the meds your taking too. You may find out your side affects have side effects too. I hate taking meds the less the better.

I stopped all salt intake completely too. I drink only water now.

Hug your kids and grandchildren everyday tell them you love them.
