What might a ban look like? Respectful discussion please...

Found this about the scumbag that shot those firefighters.

QUOTE, "The rifle, which had a combat-style flash suppressor, is similar to the one used by the gunman who massacred 20 children and six women in a Newtown, Conn., elementary school earlier this month."

Another article described the Bushmaster assault sniper rifle as "being equipped with a high powered telescope sight and flash supression."

Go to the news today boys... NO AR used in Sandy Hook shootings. All pistols. The rifle was left in the ***'s car.

There have been so many conflicting reports, who knows what gun was used. The real point is that fienstien's stupid proposed law wouldn't have done a darn thing to prevent the shooting. This has nothing to do with crime and everything to do with loss of freedom. That is what they are really after.

The government can "try"to take away our second ammendment rights...but they will only suceed if we "give up" our rights. At some point...citizens may have to say...this is unacceptable and we will not give up oiur rights. The number of hunters in just 4 mid west states exceeds the size of the largest army in the world...and thats not counting the other 46 states. They can not take...what we will not give. The military is made up of our sons and daughters and I doubt they would turn on their own people to try to remove our rights under the constitution. So taking our guns will be no laughing matter for many of us and all you need to do is think of Rewanda, germany and the Taliban taking weapons from the people and see what happened next. Armed people are citizens and listened to...unarmed people are subjects and can be treated accordingly.....its up to us...not them. I know, I will never give up my second ammendment rights to anyone or any government.

As an ousider, I don't think there will be any drastic changes.

An "assault weapon" ban. But I have absolutley no idea of what an "assault weapon" is. Some appear to be military looking semi-auto .22s. Wow, they are dangerous.

10 shot magazines. But doesn't that just encourage people to carry more magazines.

I suspect there will be pre-purchase checks, possibly including medical checks.

In the meantime, let's all on both sides of the issue keep the dialogue respectful, reasoned, appropriately volumed, and, if we can manage it, flexible enough so that both sides can acknowledge the strong points of the other's arguments.

There's work to be done here that can be beneficial to all of us as Americans, if we will all just try to be the kinds of citizens the Founders trusted we would be.

Let's try to rise to this occasion, folks, and find common ground that would help prevent in the future the kinds of things we've seen way too much of lately, while preserving the rights guaranteed by our Constitution.

Tell me please, what are the "strong points" of the anti gun group?

Are you suggesting that the Founding Fathers would find fault with gun owners?

Would you care to elaborate on your " common ground" statement? What compromise are you willing to accept?

I live in NJ, life here isn't likely to change much. We need a purchase permit for a BB gun.

Jawbone of a *******

I so hope I am proven to be wrong, but I can see congress jumping all on board some gun ban nonsense precisely to avoid dealing with the real problems facing this country. Time and again we have seen both parties pull this type of stunt to shift the focus from a serious matter to something that is much less important.

Insofar as a retroactive ban is concerned, and the constitutionality thereof, take a look at what has happened with the Lautenburg domestic violence statute.

Judges 15 American King James Version
I certainly hope they include that Jawbone of a ******* that sampson used to kill 1,000 men.
Nowadays they could be made in stainless steel?

Remember, the military will obey the orders they are given. As far as them turning on their own people, I would hope that they would disobey such orders. However, history has proven otherwise. An example is what happened when the US Army was ordered by Herbert Hoover against WWI veterans in Washington in 1932....and before that in 1781.

Follow the money

Last night a left wing news station interviewed some of the “experts” about the record 500 killings in south side of Chicago this year. They all agreed it was young black males killing each other with guns. They agreed (in their opinion) the problem was guns. I only recall hearing the word drugs maybe two or three times.

Obviously if no one mentions the profit motive of illegal drugs nothing will ever be solved. Must be nice for the drug smugglers, fences, pushers, and all the gang leader hit men and middle men to blame the bad gun.

Unfortunately I remember the movie “Blackboard Jungle” and “Rebel without a cause” that caused my nice switch blade knife to be considered evil and outlawed. It was such a comfort when doing the once a month nighttime collecting money for the newspapers delivered during daylight hours. The 30 or so dollars I might have in my pocket (sixth or seventh grade?) was like 300 dollars today. Gasoline was 25 cents a gallon before the politicians began printing money to pay for wars. Policemen and firemen made about 200 dollars a month.

A brief mention of (Dubai?) financing a movie about the evils of drilling for oil shale (fracking). I wonder who financed the movie China Syndrome that killed off nuclear power plants?

Perhaps the movie True Lies (and others) is helping gun control advocates in their quest to disarm America.

One thing I don't see mentioned...

... is that besides certain bans on weapons there will probably also be a change in the way firearms can be purchased. Even though it had nothing to do with the events at Sandy Hook, a large arguing point of the anti-gun crowd is how easy it is to purchase a weapon.

All I know is based on what I have seen in the last week, there are now tens of thousands of AR's in the hands of people who cannot use them. Not sure how good that is.

These are the people driving up the prices.

Magazines are a different story, but I would venture to guess than at least 50% of the AR's bought this week cant even spell AR, let alone shoot one safely or accurately.

Amen on that, and on top of it all these morons are payig 300 percent more for the same rifle you could have bought just a month ago. :) I hope no ban comes and you got tons of people that bought the ak's and ar-15's and lost their you know what.

First I believe an EO similar to the ones issued by G.H.W. Bush and W.J. Clinton against the Chinese, will be issued relative to the GCA '68 narrowly defining the sporting purpose criteria. Target pistols and truly sporting long guns-only. I expect parts and magazines included in the EO.

Given the fiscal cliff experience I pray nothing can be rammed through the House. I really doubt the Senate as well, not that fast. it hasn't been too long since Schumer admitted on NPR the Democratic majority depended on ignoring reproductive issues and guns. The inclination to act and the pressure to do so will be ratcheted up, no doubt.

The most vulnerable item out there is magazines. Some one has to recognize without the magazines the other features don't amount to as much. Along side we must not forget just compensation. I question whether the tactic of NFA-ing and surrender/nontransferable without compensation can pass muster. Banning and buying out magazines will be far cheaper.

Whatever happens, looking at the Commonwealth countries as a model, the rate of noncompliance will be high. Canadians recently concluded, successfully, eight years of civil disobedience refusing to obtain licenses for their unrestricted long arms.

Whatever happens this will be interesting, and soon.

I think we will see a new law with any crime committed with a firearm getting the death penalty.

Maybe, but you do realize that Wayne LaPierre has been a tireless champion of the 2nd Ammendment for many years, right? He has done waaaaaaay more than most to protect our gun rights from endless assaults by the Dims.

Really? What has he done? His job? Somebody else who isn't so despised couldn't hurt. This is Amercia. Charisma goes a long way. La Pierre doesn't have any.

Tell me about it. It's gotten to the point that i will only go to the range on days that I KNOW there will not be anybody there. The worse the weather is, the better. Too many unsafe idiots out there. That's another battle, trying to ensure that these idiots demonstrate a BASIC level of competency before they buy a gun. Now that this has happened, you have these idiots stocking up on guns and ammo and they are dangerous.

I see the ban happening again, with only one characteristic on the weapon as opposed to 2 like the last one.

mags over 10 rounds? Gone. Pre-ban mags will be grandfathered.

Mental health database? Strenghtened. LaPierre even mention that one. 37 states don;t even put the names into the database, which is how Virginia Tech and Aurora shooters were able to legally buy their guns.

Private sale? Gone. All purchases will go through an FFL.

Putting the M1 carbine on that list is just stupid. a 70 year old weapon is an "assault weapon"?
