What smells good?

When I purchased my first gun I asked what cleaning products were recommended. No surprise that I received a lot of suggestions. One of the qualities that was often mentioned was how good a product smelled. I think Hoppe's even mentions how good their No. 9 smells in one of their videos. Well, I've since collected a good assortment of chemicals and must say that smelling good is not an attribute I would give to any of them. Ballistol smells something like soiled baby diapers and Hoppe's isn't much better, like adding Johnson's baby powder to the mix. I have no idea and can't attest to any cleaners, degreasers, etc. working better than another so I'm going to choose to use whatever smells best. Any suggestions on this basis?

the nose knows.....personally I have liked the smell of no.9 for over 40 years.....and I use Ballistol too.....but I burnt up my nose innards years ago with way too much Afrin use

Not that its ever been an issue or determining factor but IMO hoppes #9 smells as good, if not better, than any of them.
Years ago I'd splash a dab on before a date and the one that complimented about my cologne had to be the right one.

I use Frog Lube, and it smells like mint. Very, very strong mint.

Best smell is from G96 Spray Gun lube = bubblegum

Close second is Frog Lube = Mint

But those are multipurpose clean, lube and protect.

Still use Hoppes #9 for general cleaning prior to above products, as it is cheap and goes a long ways (but generally avoided after Frog Lube treating firearms). Or just Hoppes #9 and Weapons Shield instead of great smelling multipurpose stuff.

Ever since I was a kid, there was a smell I always associated with guns and that was hoppe's #9. Opening my grandpas gun closet was like goin thru the gates of heaven smelling the hoppe's #9 and seeing all the S&W's. It always stuck as a great smell to me, and brings back memories I'll never forget. Still use it today.

Started out using Hoppe's Works great but does smell. Tried Frog Lube. Smells nice, Wintergreen I think, and works well but the application was a bit too tedious for me, having to heat everything up and all. Plus the "Opening the pores of the metal" statement put me off. Next was Pro-Shot 1 step cleaner & lubricant. Virtually no smell and works very well. Still use it. I also use M-Pro 7, both the cleaner and the oil. No smell and works well also. Would recommend you try either or both of those.

I would second RobsTV vote for G96 as the best smelling cleaning product. My wife has no complaints about it either. She makes me go to the man cave with all other cleaning products I own. G96 is a multi-purpose product and seems to clean better than other multi-purpose products such as CLP.

Frog lube though expensive is minty fresh.

My wife hates it, but I like the smell of Ed's Red.

Bore Butter comes in either wintergreen or pine scents. The pine is good for deer hunting.

Here's my vote for Eezox. It also is possibly the best anti corrosion protection around.

I've seen the corrosion test for Eezox and it is very good stuff. I'm not sure the smell appeals to me but I trust it for long term protection.

I believe I commented on these "smells" on another thread a while back. I clean all my guns in the garage at my bench and use Hoppes #9. Depending on how much gets "spilled", the smell hangs around for days. I always liked it but was surprised that my wife really likes the way it smells. But, she does a lot of paper crafts involving various glues and solvents and loves the smell of all of them. One of her favorites is the smell of gasoline when she fills the gas tank.

Hoppe's Elite Gun Oil, is one product I can truly say is "low-odor" with no harsh or objectionable smell.
I have used others that required the cleaned/lubed gun spend a few days in another room before bringing into the bedroom.
The Elite oil just barely has a smell and I think it pleasant. And it is a great gun oil.
The one product I find has a smell I just can't learn to love is Cleanzoil. Bought a big bottle on recommendation from a friend , retired LEO and gun dealer and the stuff has an odd off-putting smell (it reeks).

Why not use something with NO ODOR, like M-PRO7. It is also no-toxic. Be sure to use oil after cleaning because the cleaner will strip away all oils. Their oils are great also.

My Desert Eagle 50 AE came with full size bottles of cleaner and oil a few years ago and I really liked it. Reading the fine print showed it was M-Pro 7 and I have used it ever since. They partnered with Hoppe's to develop their Elite product line.

And now it looks like I'll soon have a new collection of chemicals 'cause many of the ones listed above are not in my first batch. I like the sound of the low tech name of Frog Lube. LOL
