The "shelters" I have seen were less well prepared than my home. The only thing that might be available at a shelter that I don't have at home would be health care professionals but I still think I would be better off and safer at home and armed than unarmed in a shelter. All references to shelters I have seen stipulate no firearms and no pets. Another reason I wouldn't go to a shelter. I have no intention of being surrounded by people who are willing to abandon their pets!!

Really a simple matter- store up a reasonable amount of everything that would be hard to get. If you can stay, you are cool. If you have to go, take what you can.
Not exactly rocket science.

One other thing to worry about. I have reason to belive that there is technology out there that can shutdown all electrical. I have heard it claimed that even your flashlight wont turn on and your car cant start.
I havent personnaly seen it, but heard of it secound hand from people that claimed to have experienced it in remote desert test areas 25 years ago. If the goverment really has that, that would really cut down your odds of long term hit and run wilderness survival!

That is the EMP weapon some have mentioned (electro mechanical pulse). The theory is that it prevents anything that uses electricity in any form (including batteries) from operating.

Presumably the Chinese, Russians, and Iranians (at a minimum) are working on such weapons.

The only protection is items that have been specifically 'hardened' against such attacks. Hopefully the military has hardened equipment. I certainly have none.

There's no impact on guns and ammo though, and if we're ever subjected to one of these types of weapons, you'll need lots of both.

You're right, it's not rocket science, but it does help (IMO) to think about it a bit and plan carefully.

Water, as an example, doesn't last forever. You need to plan quantity needed and recycle it periodically. Foods and medicines have shelf lives, depending on methods used for storage, and also need to be recycled.

It also helps to think about what you'll need so you don't forget anything critical (ex. medications).

It can also kind of interesting if you really get into it.


As for the 'Swayze plan' there are some good tips there, but I'm worried about what folks in MA would do if I yelled 'Wolverine!' at them. I probably need an alternative scary animal, or I could just yell...."Gun owner!"

Some of you, can do what we in FL do.
Stock up on stuff and do first in, first out supply line.
Use what you have, after you resupply.
Two storage areas in the house. One month, stock one area up.
Before you use it, stock the other area.
Now, use area one, first and before you run out, supply the other area.
This way, you always have a full supply.
Two houses on my block, share. I don't. Why? I've got a better and bigger supply. They don't like what I stock.
Sardines, Spam, Canned Veggies, bottled juices and such.
Now, the gotta haves, SNACKS!!!! All kinds of chips, cookies, soda, coffee, Tea and such.
Don't forget, AMMO, first aid kit, batteries, CB radio run by car battery, AM radio, flashlites, (a few of them that take differant battery sizes.)
Last----water, with purification pills.
Don't forget, a run bag.
I wont leave. I have pet birds, 6 of them and they are not welcome in shelters.
Can't drive anywhere, roads will be full and stopped.
Looters, will be everywhere. Run a few over. Shoot a few. They'll get the idea, not to mess with you or yours.

No problem. You just go to the shelter, shoot anyone who says you can't have guns or pets. Piece of cake. It's called Natural Selection. Although,I would advise against using their bodies for pet food. Don't want Skippy developing a taste for "long pig".

To my way of thinking, someone who would abandon their pet in an emergency has resigned from humanity. As such I couldn't say what species they were being selected for or from, only that it definitely isn't mine.

EMP, or Electromagnetic Pulse, is part of any nuclear explosion, and presumably nuclear bombs and detonation scenarios can be optimized for stronger EMP. Also to some degree EMP can be created without the nuclear bomb. What it will effect mainly is semiconductor junction devices (diodes, transistors, integrated circuits, etc). So while your LED flashlight may be destroyed, your old fashioned battery and bulb flashlight should be OK. And while your new computer-controlled car may be fried, your old points-and-condenser ignition car should be fine, other than its alternator, if it has one, and of course the radio. It's possible to shield devices from EMP by putting them inside conductive containers (Faraday cages) which tend to route the energy around what's inside. A radio stored in a steel ammo can would be less likely to be affected than one in the open. But that doesn't mean there will be anything to listen to ON that radio. Relatively few electrical devices today are built without semiconductors, or with EMP shielding. So a big enough EMP close enough to your location means you will be living a much more primitive lifestyle. So when your cellular phone goes dead, you can sit back and wonder if a cloud of radioactive fallout might be blowing in soon...

Incorrect! people call them "tinfoil" hats, but that is a misnomer! They mean aluminum. "Tinfoil" may also have been coined by 'the establishment' to throw the uninformed off track.
ALUMINUM is what you want. It is a better conductor, so you get better protection as it conducts rays around you. It's superior shine also offers more reflective capability for some type rays.
Last, the shininess looks cooler.

In this part of North Carolina one and I mean one single snow flake and it is panic city. Bread, milk, and bottled water simply disappear from the grocery store shelves. They're still stressed out over the last major ice storm that occurred fifteen plus years ago. If there is ever a major event these people aren't going to handle it very well. Not handling it very well isn't unique to this part of the country either. You might as well just stay in place while the rest of humanity stampedes.

Those are my thoughts exactly. Around here we have trouble with heavy rain and traffic. Once we learn how to cope with those emergencies, we can spend time planning for when the SHTF. That said, if it really happens, most will just roll over and get on line for the government dole.

Just my opinion, worth something less than a cup of joe.

My home is high enough that I can't be flooded. I also have enough food to last a very long time, not to mention whatever I may have in the garden at the time. There is also plenty of wild life. I have some water stored, but also have a fresh water source (spring) if need be.

For me, I'd be able to hold up at home easily. So I guess really my SHTF scenario is mainly home defense.

I need to get a working on the patent for my very newest 3 layer hat. Aluminum on the outside and polar tec for comfort on the inside. These layers will sandwich a durable tin "insurance" layer. When the SHTF I will sell them for all the many available gold and silver coins......
