What WheelGun Would You Carry if You Were Made a Deputy TODAY??

While I am a big bore fan I wouldn't carry a 500. First of all it weighs as much as some rifles and is about as handy. I have worked steel most of my life weigh 250 and it ain't fat and have some serious meat hooks. It is much harder for me to bring a 44 mag or a hot 45 Colt back in line than a 45ACP.

If I knew I was going into a gun fight I would carry a USMC M32A1 40mm grenade launcher with anti personnel rounds and hey its a revolver.

my 19-2 2.5". it is extremely accurate. i can hit pie plates at 40 yards with 158 JHP and do fist sized groups at 25 yards offhanded. the DA is great too. it is truly a work of gun art. right up there with my 27-2 3.5" in quality and accuracy and half the size.
 
I wish I had more experience with S&W's revolvers; I'm pretty limited to the Model 586 and 66. Personally, I like the 586 since it's what I grew up with, and would choose it again in a heartbeat.

Would I feel undergunned? Yes, but only because I'm used to semi-autos and it's what I use for matches and carry currently. However, seeing as how I've considered a J frame for concealed carry, or even a single stack 9mm, I'd probably have little issue if I got more time to get familiarize myself with it.
 
I've carried a slicked up 586 with fuzzy farrant grips. 300 gunsmith service cut the frame to fit on the grips.
I've also carried a 28-2 4"
I'd gladly carry either one but that 586 was like an extension of my hand.

I like some of the new ones too like the 686SSR - nice.
 
Re: Not hard to figure. For the police officer, the revolver would be a 4 inch 686 w/ Pachmayer Presentation Grips. For the PO or DAI, the revolver would be a 2.5-3 inch RB M-66. If one got involved in a situation with multiple assailants, you'd have to reload. Couple of speed loaders and you'd be in business.
 
Way back when, 1976, I first carried a Model 10 4" then in 1977 I got the Model 66 4" when we got the chance to buy one through a department order. Still have the 66, I later got a 66 2 1/2".

No, really I would do a 686+ or 686 SSR. Heck, the now extinct S&W 619 was pretty slick too. The only improvement would be a pinned front sight. However.....accuse me of heresy: the Ruger Match Target has a lot too. I've played with a few @ shops and they are quite nice indeed.

A paper weight?

The few times it was out of the holster it was a think a Colt New Service 6". I recall the ejector rod floating free.

I'm sorry that's just overkill....in fact it's LESS of a stopper against humans than you think. .500 has the energy of a 7.62x39 at the muzzle, it will likely punch straight through a bad guy causing a straight .50 wound channel. If a bad guy is on PCP he may have a few seconds of fight left.......357 However dumps most if its kinetic energy inside the body cavity creating massive trauma and hydrostatic shock = greater stopping power. Massive instant blood loss, organ destruction and just plain knock down power.

.......is the old, proven 125 gr. .357 fight stopper favored by Bill Jordan and countless others who have actually used it against REAL bad guys not enough?

It is for me, if I meet something that can take a Remington 125 gr. SP .357 center mass and keep coming I guess I'm screwed.....

Some of these new Ruger only loads like Buffalo Bore .357 +P+ 180 gr. would probably saw someone in half, I don't know how much more trauma can be inflicted vs. a .500 on a human target. There's not much in this world that can survive a kill shot with a hot .357 Magnum unless you're expecting to have to drop Elephants, Hippos or Cape Buffalo.....

If you have to fire that .500 indoors to defend yourself, good luck with those blown out eardrums...

In a smaller N. AZ mountain town, an officer with that department told me of a local doing just that. He had the 4" S&W .500 with the muzzle break. A tweeker entered the home & found his foolself on the business end of the hand howitzer. The tweeker ducked & bailed as the victim was dropping the hammer. Needless to say; tweeker escaped & the windows from the muzzle forward in the single wide trailer were now permenantly opened. Victim has SEVERE hearing damage. Would have been served much better with a .44 Spl.

-If I couldn't get one of those, a 686 plus.

-If I couldn't get one of those, I'd use my old 681.

So my preference is based on the the principle of, "the more rounds, the better."
 
Uniformed = my 4" 686. Plainclothes = my 2 1/2" 686
Off duty would be my Md#36
These are what I have available! ;)
