What would you consider to be the top 5, must have, S&W revolvers.............

I'm going with the following:

M520 NYSP
M58
M681-4 PC
M547 4"
M629-2 Mountain Revolver

I hate to whine, but 5 just isn't enough... ;)

The Five

My choice would be:
Model 17 6" Blue with TH and TT standard grips ( 2T's I guess)
Model 14 6" Blue with TH and TT standard grips (2 T's I guess)
Model 10 3" Blue Square Butt
Model 34 2" Blue
Model 19 6" Blue with TH and TT and Target Grips (3 T's I guess)

All pinned barrels.....

Not really interested if they are Blued, Stainless or Chromed but rather model numbers and barrel lengths..........not interested in future value (investment pieces) but pure shooters. If you could only own 5 S&W revolvers.....what would they be. Can't wait to hear the opinions.

5 Revolvers

J Frame: Model 642, 2 inch
K Frame: Model 617, 4 inch; Model 64, 4 inch
L Frame: Model 686 Plus, 4 inch
N Frame: Model 629, 4 inch

IMHO:
J-frame snub (M60, M642, M36, M34, M63)
K-frame (M66, M10, K-22)
L-frame (M686, M681, something from the P.C.)
N-frame (M29/M629, M27, M28)
And, something old/classic (RM, pre-anything, old M&P)

A 4' Model 617, ten shooter AND Mountain Guns in 686+, 629, and 625 in BOTH .45ACP and .45Colt. NONE of these should have the accursed lock.......

Only pre-lock models and these models in particular: 29/629, 57/657, 586/686, 617, 651.

They're all good, and I couldn't make it without at least a few S&W's, and some Colt n' Ruger revolvers thrown in for good measure!

I guess I'll throw my choices into the mix. Seeing how I am new at this even though I'm on the wrong side of 60. Here are the choices I made in the past 3 years.

M17-6 with no under lug .22lr
M18-3 .22lr
M14-3 .38 spec.
M25-2 .45acp / .45ar

I hope #5 to be a M25-5 .45 Colt.

I have fallen in love with the rich blue of the older all steel revolvers. I also love to shoot all those I own. I tend to be more of an accumulator than a collector. Those S&W's I feel I must own will be handed down to family after I'm gone ( 40 years from now ).

My choices are;
1. 66-2 in 3"
2. 625-6 in 3"
3. 610-2 in 3"
4. 629-4 in 3"
5. 640 PC in 2 7/8"

Keeping it to two calibers:

1. PC 627 8 shot 2.625" Barrell (do not own)
2. PC 627 8 shot 5" Barrell (own)
3. PC 629 (former Stealth Hunter before that moniker was reassigned to the black full lug 629) w/Leupold scope (own)
4. PC 629 2.625" Barrell (do not own)
5. Model 60 J Frame (do own a 1976, but for sale to buy number 1 above)

Model 36 2" 38 special
Model 13 3" 357 magnum
Model 1905 or pre-Model 10 4" 38 special
Pre-Model 27 6" 357 magnum
Pre-Model 29 4" 44 magnum

I'll shoot my Ruger Mark 1 if I need to shoot .22's.

My favorite five in this order:
Model 17 Target Masterpiece with 6" barrel
Model 65-3 with 3" barrel
Model 36 Chief's Special with 2" barrel
Model 66 with 4" barrel
Model 10 with 4" heavy barrel

Having just become (Jul 2011) a S&W revolver shooting enthusiast I'm enjoying shooting these five plus those that have not made the top five.

Great thread!

Looking at carry & within some kind of a budget....

Two J frame Centennials preferably .357 Magnums: one steel and one alloy;
two 3" to 4" 357's: K, L, or N frame - your choice; and
a 3" or 4" N frame 44 Special.

For myself, two N frame 3 1/2" M27-8's and a 4" M21; with a 640-1 & a 642 could work....

But I don't like leaving out the 38/44's, the Registered Magnums, the M19's & M66's & M15's & M10's, the 686+'s, the 3" M625's, that 4" K frame 32 H&R Magnum, etc...
