Stop by my local gun store and a had Several 3rd gen Smiths

5906TSW (1)
4006TSW (2)

Price $400

All are police trades in topical police condition (outside wear). I really like both but cant justify buying both. However .....

The good - I already have 9mm ammo and a 5946 so mags and ammo are already there.

The bad- Hard to think of one ..but 9mm range ammo us none existent atm.

40XX

The good- range and SD ammo is available although not cheap. Variety is good!

The bad- hard to think of one ....but...thats another gun to feed and more mags to buy :(

Hey! Its hard enough finding stuff. Forget about it and just buy ammo for what you have!

Tough choice. I'd probably buy the 9MM for the reasons stated.

You can mail me the 4006 if you'd like though :)
 
Even though I'm somewhat of a 40 freak, I would say go with the 5906TSW. No need to get into another caliber. Oh, & just to make sure you aren't tempted by the 4006TSW, send it to ME! I can't be saved(out of my eight pistols, four of them are 40's)you can still walk away & and save yourself!:D:cool:
 
Arik, a LGS has some former LE trade-in S&W 4013 TSW handguns that have the box and three mags. The rail has been removed on the guns, two holes in the dust covers. You would have to pay shipping and your FFL fee though.

4013 is single stack right? Thanks but if im buying a TSW i want the rails and double stack. And if i buy these i plan on putting a Hogue rubber grips on them for a thicker and better grip.

Besides my FFL is $40 and shipping is about $20 +/-

Actually, the 4013TSW is a double stack. The grip is nice, giving you something to hold on to without being too thick. I'm not sure about the 5906, but the 4013TSW is better suited for concealed carry than the 4006. I have one of each, & the 4013 feel like it is half the weight & half the size of the 4006. I like them both, but for carry it would have to be the 4013TSW for me. And thanks again Bruce!:D:cool:

Seeing how you already got all the goodies for a 5900 series, I'd say stick with what you got.
That said, as you wisely stated .40 is still plentiful and abundant.
At last count I had 3 9mms and only one .40. With the ongoing insanity though, I have been looking at possibly getting another .40.
4000 series mags were still out there last time I checked.
Accuracy wise the 5906 will trounce the 4006, but the .40 supposedly has more thump on the receiving end.

No, they aren't safe queens by any means. With a little work though they are fine. I myself was looking for a pre-rail model & if you've looked at any of the auction sites recently you'll know that they are going out of sight. I bought one of the guns that Bruce is talking about, with his help. Sure, I would love to have a NIB pre-rail & maybe some day I will. But having one I can shoot & enjoy is more important to me.:cool::D
 
I bought my 4003 BECAUSE of it taking a different ammo than my 9mm. Even then I could sometimes find .40 easier than 9mm. CDNN had 4006 mags cheap, not sure if they still do.
 
Im still going back and forth on it. Went to a few stores and everyone was out of 9 & 45 40 was still available......but then i spotted a very clean model 36 :banghead::banghead:

The guns I mentioned are in your price range. Shipping is not that costly. IF you want one, I am off on Tuesday. I can go by the shop and pick the better of the three remaining guns for you.
 
UPDATE: Went back yesterday and they were down one 4006, the better one....slightly. Still couldnt decide. Figured that since I was on my way to a friends house I could stop by another GS near him. This place has been around since the 50s and they have a lot of neat stuff, unfortunately they are usually priced at their limit. Not over priced but if there is a certain gun is valued at say $200-$400 in good condition they'll mark it at $395.

Anyway, Im looking around and spot a 4506 (no dash, square trigger guard). Very nice, clean, adjustable sights for just under $600. I ask to see it and the salesman hands it to me and leaves. Comes back 5 seconds later and shows me another 4506 (no dash, square trigger guard) that just came in for consignment. This one was a police gun T.C.S.O or something like that ....some Sheriffs office. This one comes with case, 4 mags, original and Hague grips and an extra recoil spring.....just under 5 bills!! Well I couldnt pass that up. Going from almost never ever seeing one to holding two at the same time in one store.....well someone was trying to tell me something!!! Whats odd is Ive never seen one with dovetail sights. Original sights...obviously, Novak...sure on most PD guns, but never dovetail 3 dot.

Honestly I was so close to making a deal for both but I talked myself out of it. That still close to a grand and thats no small change to blow off in one day....besides I still need ammo for my other guns as well.

So I put it on layaway and will have it home within a month



Maybe I'll still pick up the other one!?!?!?!




EDIT TO ADD:

The previous owner polished the slide! :( It looks nice Im just not a fan of shiny guns...makes it look like jewelry...an accessory and not a tool. Is there anyway to undo that or will it just go away with time?

I don't know how you have so many 3gen choices near you, but well done, Arik.
Regarding the finish on your 4506...
Yes, you can return it to nearly factory finish with bead blasting or even 3M pads. Proper pad use is essential though. Do a search on refinishing so that you are clear on details before starting.

Its because one shop deals in a lot of police trades. The gun store is actually a side business kinda. The main business is buying and selling to police agencies around the country. They also get a lot of police guns from overseas. Currently they have a 910 and a bunch of CZ imported by CAI from police surplus in other countries.

Every black friday they have a massive sale. This year there were loads of 4566, 5906/46, different types of 40XX, 39XX, 69XX...

My preference is for the 5900 Series. :)

Although I prefer the .40 S&W over the 9mm for self-defense, I prefer S&W Autos in either 9mm (that frame was originally sized for the 9mm) or in .45 ACP (likewise, that pistol is specifically sized for the .45 ACP).

The .40 S&W was sort of "stuffed" into that 9mm envelope as evidenced by the "high capacity" magazines only holding 11 rounds and the other improvements to help that pistol stand up to that cartridge.

The 4006 is, however, more comfortable to shoot than any of the polymer framed .40s. All that jazz that Glock says about its polymer frame absorbing recoil is true (just watch a high speed or even slow motion video of it in firing), but to me and every other person who has tried the two pistols side by side, the 4006 feels MUCH more comfortable and its weight really helps with recoil. On the other hand, its weight also makes it heavy for carry.

Were it me, I would get the 5900 Series unless I just wanted to fill out a collection or something.
