This happened just yesterday (10/16) in my town. Here's the background:
Armed suspect in stolen truck, wanted in home invasion, is spotted by police officer. Crashes truck on a very busy road in town, and while fleeing, exchanges shots with police officer. Shooting at the police officer.
While fleeing across busy road with gun in hand (cars stopping, brakes squealing, etc., etc.), suspect attempts to hijack at least two occupied vehicles.
So, let's stop right there for a second. Now, North Carolina has fairly lenient gun laws. We're open carry and shall issue. You can openly carry a loaded handgun in your vehicle with no permit at all, long as it is visible. None of this having to hide it away in the glove box or lock it in the trunk or whatever. We can cruise around with one laying on the dash if that's what we want to do. You can also, of course, have it concealed as long as you have a valid CHP.
So you've had to stop due to this commotion and gunfire, you're armed...maybe with the gun laying on the seat next to you...and here comes this fool running up with a gun in his hand, yanking on your door handle. You're surrounded by stopped cars, you can't run, you can't drive off. Maybe your wife is in the car with you. Maybe your little baby is strapped in a car seat in the back.
What would you have done? Don't throw in any "ifs" or "buts" or "depends on..." stuff. It's a simple question.
Realistically and seriously...what would you have done?
