What Would You Have Done?

this is kind of a pointless question. You didn't leave any options open other than the one you wanted people to arrive at.

you might just as well ask if I tied 100 pounds of lead to your feet and pushed you off a boat in the middle of the ocean what would you do? Die there's really no other possible answer.

I'd untie the weight and swim.

He's got a gun in his hand and he's trying to forcibly enter my vehicle and I cannot drive away? He gets shot, no hesitation, no warning.

Would have protected me and my own.
He would have committed his last great act of defiance.
I would have ended his reign of terror
Dead as a doornail, if you know what I mean
End of story

It depends.

If the suspect was my broker she might just be having a bad day. I'm pretty sure I could calm the situation by telling her I've got a hot stock tip.

Nah..Mine is loose on the seat.. covered usually. Carrying a gun in a holster in a vehicle? Always hated it. Some part of it is always sticking into you somewhere! I must admit a holster is a convenience when out of the vehicle though. LOL

I posted in another thread about being rear ended at a stop light. My Glock 23 was wedged tightly between the driver's seat and the console. The impact dislodged the gun, a rescue knife clipped to the visor, and everything else in the vehicle that wasn't fastened down. You need a better holster and/or a different gun. Even a panic stop may put your "loose on the seat" firearm somewhere you can't reach it or even find it.

To keep on track with the OP, I try as others have recommended, to leave room to drive away. Not always possible, but in sketchy areas, one can arrange to avoid being blocked in by other drivers. Stay in an outside lane, left or right. Leave enough room between you and the car ahead to escape. That means usually you can see the rear tires of the car in front.

If all my defensive actions still resulted in a guy trying to get in my car, I would shoot.

It seems tome that one of the lawmen in the Miami affair had his pistol on the seat. It flew into the other footwell and he went into battle with his BUG. Better to have the pistol fastened down.

If he tries to get into my car, I'll shoot him. If I just drive off, he may kill the guy in the car behind mine.

I forgot about that in my earlier post. There were TWO of the agents that lost their primary weapons because they had taken them out of their holsters and loose on the seats. Manauzzi's was gone and he was out of the fight, Hanlon went in with his J-frame BUG.

Let me get this scenario straight. Visibly armed crazy guy, being chased by police, is going down a line of cars checking door handles to find an unlocked door. The cars cannot move and there is no way out as he approaches your car.

Ok he is NOT looking to carjack, he is looking for a hostage. If he was going to carjack, he would have busted the first window and drove off. I stand with just about everyone else. He would be face up on the ground, my passengers would need hearing aids and I would be saying "I want to press charges against that man" as I raise my hands over my head. I would also have my wife PM Cajun Lawyer and ask if he has any great lawyer relatives practicing in the great state of WV. At that moment you don't know if the guy is dead and you want to establish that you are the victim even though LE already knows that.

Well, no, it doesn't depend. Right offhand, I'd say a coke dealer shooting at cops and trying to hijack cars at gunpoint on a busy city street in broad daylight is a bit more than someone just "having a bad day".

Luckily, no one was shot or killed.

The first thing I never pull up tight to the vehicle ahead of me so I can go around them if I need to. Now if other vehicles were beside me and couldn't go around I'd have no choice but shoot. I would shoot through the glass and take my chances with flying glass but if at all possible I'd try and get the window down. Not likely that'd be possible but save on glass and might reduce the noise.
My first wife's uncle was border patrol on the Texas/Mexico years ago. He was telling me about shooting his model 19 through the open passenger window in the Scout he was driving at a jack rabbit of all things. He said he regretted it as he couldn't hear for days. I'd not want to shoot inside a vehicle either but would to save my life and other's.

One of my training officers was left handed and loved that he could shoot jackrabbits and have the empty's land on the dashboard. I shoot ambidextrous but never tried that and hearing is still ragged.
