Colt Mustang Plus II (My wife carries it mostly)
Federal PDX-1 or Hornady Crit Def

It eats both very well and as of late, they are both somewhat available locally.

I carry FMJs because I don't believe that expanding bullet will always work out of a short barreled gun like a LCP. I also like the feeding reliability of FMJs.

But to each his own.

I think you're on target with this line of thought.

Check out the recent tests by ShootingTheBull. Very detailed testing on the .380 out of a mini pistol. His final cut came to ANY quality round with the Hornady XTP bullet. He proved some very well liked choices like Critical Defense just don't cut it. After watching it I switched to the HPR when I carry my LCP. Just my thoughts.

Ballistic personal defense weapons work by penetration. Not by expansion. A hollow point won't hurt a .45, but it will keep a .380 from penetrating adequately.

I carry WWB. I like the meplat. I just wish it was loaded a little hotter.

All the XTPs from the test I mentioned above penetrated 12" or better. All the FMJs over-penetrated. Ammo is getting better.

I Carry Hornady CD in my BG .380, use PMC Bronze at the range. Interesting opinions here. I never wanted to carry FMJ because I feel the chance of penetrating through and hitting an unintended something or someone behind the target is greater.

The problem with .380 for self defense is inadequate penetration. Worrying about over penetration is surreal.

Using a hollow point in a .380 further limits penetration, which is already inadequate.

In .380 I want accuracy and penetration.
Accuracy comes from practice. In .380, adequate penetration, no matter the seasonal clothing layers nor weight of the perpetrator, comes reliably only with FMJ.
Therefore, FMJ. Always FMJ.
