What’s the Saddest Song You Ever Heard?

Billy Joel - Good night my angel
Enya - if I could be where you are

Can not listen to those tunes without tearing up. So, I don't listen to them.

Many years ago Johnny Carson asked Mac Davis what was the saddest song he had ever sung.

He said it was "I'm Drinkin' Christmas Dinner All Alone". Carson nearly collapsed laughing.

Years later I actually did that. Wasn't so damn funny then.

There are a few old ones that get to me, partly because they were "Dad's songs" and partly for the lyrics. Lots of songs are sadder sounding.

"Photographs and Memories" by Jim Croce

"Who Knows Where the Time Goes" by Fairport Convention (or Judy Collins)

"I'm Sorry" by John Denver

"Rocky" by Austin Roberts
Made me cry when 1st heard in 1975. Story of young love, fix house, have baby and lose spouse:

Many mentions of Harry Chapin "Cat's in the Cradle", and agreed-a sad song of regrets. But I believe "Taxi" is another good one of what "might have been":

Surely a talent and humanitarian gone too soon.

As a teenager I cried every time I heard this song.

Splish Splash..................... by Bobby Darin.

Not that it was sad but..........
It was the ten Millianth time that I have heard it that year
and I started crying!!

One that gets to me is "You are my sunshine " used to sing it to my wife and now when i hear it i tear up
YouTube

This song is one of the most popular that we did at nursing homes. The older folks remembered it from their youth and would just sing their hearts out as we played.

Anything to bring a little joy to their hearts and a smile to their faces.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

My friend WuzzFuzz asked me to post this for him as it is one of his favorite sad songs (mine too).

From Les Miserables:

"Danny Boy" brings tears to my eyes every time. To really understand the context, one should hear all the verses, to wit:

Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side.
The summer's gone, and all the roses falling,
It's you, it's you must go and I must bide.

But come ye back when summer's in the meadow,
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow,
It's I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow,
Oh, Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so!

But when ye come, and all the flowers are dying,
If I am dead, as dead I well may be,
You'll come and find the place where I am lying,
And kneel and say an Ave there for me.

And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me,
And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be,
For you will bend and tell me that you love me,
And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me.

Not a song, but a melody: "Taps."

John

It's probably some sad, weepy steel guitar in the background and how she left him but the tear jerkier is, she took the dog with her. :D

Another sad song but is opera (not into opera) is Sarah Brightman and "Time To Say Goodbye"
