What’s the Saddest Song You Ever Heard?

Never Say Goodbye-is one that just popped into my head. I first heard that one in 86 or so after Patty moved back to Michigan. I dont know who sings it? but boy, it sure reminded me of her every time I heard it and also made my eyes rain. Sometimes it still does and I have to turn the station when it plays.

"Cats in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin. Gets me every time.
Saw him at Circle Star Theater and Concord pavilion. Great show. Supposedly written in part by wife who never saw him while on the road. Had a thing for cellists, I understand. Oops...

Here's a sad but inspiring true-story song by the late Chuck Pyle, Here Comes the Water:

Carlene Carter is June Carter's daughter, and Johnny Cash was her step father. After losing her mother, her step-father, and her sister all in a short time, this song must be gut-wrenching to sing.

Billy Joel - Good night my angel
Enya - if I could be where you are

Can not listen to those tunes without tearing up. So, I don't listen to them.

Many years ago Johnny Carson asked Mac Davis what was the saddest song he had ever sung.

He said it was "I'm Drinkin' Christmas Dinner All Alone". Carson nearly collapsed laughing.

Years later I actually did that. Wasn't so damn funny then.

There are a few old ones that get to me, partly because they were "Dad's songs" and partly for the lyrics. Lots of songs are sadder sounding.

"Photographs and Memories" by Jim Croce

"Who Knows Where the Time Goes" by Fairport Convention (or Judy Collins)

"I'm Sorry" by John Denver
