What's with people trying to run up their post counts?

As a certain member has in his signature...

It's quality, not quantity.
And, I'll add...the proper use of smilies. ;)

Some of us run out of new guns to buy to post, or original material that is interesting.

I'm going to go cut my lawn now, and forget I posted in a nine page thread on the subject of running up post counts.

Amount of posts have nothing to do with anything...you are either full of:

  • Information
  • Malarkey
  • A Trollish Nature
  • Or a Good, Friendly Attitude
  • Or...somewhere in amongst the above

To me, there are only two situations where post count means anything.

1. When someone gripes about how the Forum is managed. I immediately look at his/her post count. It seems like you should be around awhile before you start criticizing, and even then it should be phrased as constructive criticism. Otherwise, prepare for the appellation "Troll".

2. When someone is selling something in the Classifieds. I get more of a warm fuzzy feeling if I am sending a PMO for hundreds of dollars to someone with a high post count AND who didn't just join yesterday.

I've heard that if i hit 5,000 posts, I'll get a free SlapChop.

Disinformation!

You get a trophy and a kiss and a dozen roses, presented by Dick Burg in a bikini.

(watch the post counts crash today....:D)

I wish I hadn't said that. That image may haunt me for years........

Am I over reacting?

Yes.... but it still bugs me. It seems like people try to raise their "standing" without actually contributing much to the furum itself.
WOW... Sounds like someone had a bad potty training experience.

Heck, I want to roll my post odometer back so I don't look like I have so much mileage on me.

Curious how you haven't deleted it though.....
I guess (your) misery loves company.
Once you imagine the boogey man, you can't "unsee" the image, no matter what mommy says......

I always try to welcome new members. Didn't realize there was anything wrong with it. Is there some kind of prize when you get to a certain post count or something? I'd rather see someone's post count go up by welcoming new members than by posting complaints about it. I mean, I wouldn't exactly call that an important and valuable contribution to the forum either. Take a Midol and relax!

Good Morning, Sunshine!

Being a newb, I figure I better add to this thread to up my count.

my take

before retirement set in and i don't have much time to play with the 'puter, i used to welcome all newbies into the fold, quite often i would get a pm thanking me for taking the time to post a welcome, it gave me a good feeling that people felt that way. i remember my first post and how i felt when fat tom welcomed me, was i running up my post count? no. did i enjoy getting those pm's? darn right. do i care if someone takes offense to something so small i could stick it in my eye and not feel it, take a guess.
