What's your excuse?

My son told me a few weeks ago at the range a man shot a revolver empty and then kept messing with it. Finally he asked my son what would cause the empty shells to stick. My son looked at the gun, pushed the ejector rod and the shells poped out. The man said I thought there was something else I needed to do. Last week at the same range a man came out with 2 plastic pistols he had just bought. A 9m and a .40. He wanted to see if they would shoot before he started to carry them. He put 2 shells in each gun and shot into the dirt backstop. They each shot the 2 shells. He said now it would be ok to carry them. The bad part is that those people are voting and driving. I'm scared. Larry

This reminds me of a guy I encountered at the range a few months ago. He would shoot 1 round, put the gun down and clenched his hand like he was in pain.

Come to find out he was shooting a .357 revolver and didn't have a clue that he could shoot .38s. He told the RSO that he had put 75 rounds of .357 magnum through the gun and was wondering why it hurt so much.

Terrific and sound advice by all of you. One mentioned that most of the folks here are "gun people" and I think that is very significant. I have only had my concealed carry permit for 5 years. Actually only after my hair and beard turned white and I thought that I may look like an easy mark. However I have shot guns since I was 10 and really enjoy it. I also have intense respect for the power and destructive ability of a firearm.I read extensively about guns, their use and the myriad laws governing their use. I live in open farm country and have my own range where I , my family and friends can shoot. I don't get to see those that are poorly prepared to exercise their second amendment right but believe every sad story you folks submit. I deal with the public every day and often wonder how some of them get through a day. Recently I had to deal with a "Human Resources " person that we had contracted with to help modernize our business. They contended that in our Employee Handbook we needed a paragraph that stated "No firearms were to be allowed ". I objected , stating that if one of my few employees felt that they needed a firearm for protection and I denied them that protection and their fear became a reality , I would feel responsible for their injury. That restrictive paragraph is NOT in our handbook. I gladly take novices to the range and help familiarize them with a hand gun and above all be safe. I really like to instill an enjoyable interest in firearms. With that interest comes the desire to practice and learn.

I couldn't imagine carrying a weapon without having gotten familiar with how it shoots, handles and just over all performs. Familiarity through practice...
