Just thought it would be fun/interesting to discuss some different options and perspectives...and of course see some pics :)

Mine is the 3" 686 plus...while certainly not ideal for some specific uses, IMHO it's a great balance between size, capacity, ballistics, durability, etc.

Impossible question, how could anyone pick a favorite. Kind of like asking which of your kids/grandkids is your favorite. So many answers to what seems a simple question. Here's one of my favorites, let's say my favorite 44 from the 1930s; 3rd Model HE 44 Wolf & Klar.

Or perhaps you meant in the 1980 to Present section in which case one of them would be this 617-6 Mountain Gun.

And why favorites, for both of these due to relatively few of them being available.

That's understandable, especially considering some of the impressive collections I've seen...we can certainly make it plural...favorite(s). :)

As Jeff hinted -- if you mean for this era my favorite 3" Chiefs Special is the 1984 Jovino Special Model 60 square butt.

Great looks, great balance and a bit of an oddball, like me.

No rules/conditions to participate...it's been too cold for the range, I'm bored, and thought it would be an interesting discussion... just trying to get folks to think a bit about which are their favorite(s) and why.

I like a lot of S&W revolvers so a favorite is tough to narrow down. Over the years I have probably owned 100+ S&W's and I can honestly say my favorite is my 2" model 34-1 22LR square butt. I have always liked the looks of that tall shark fin sight for some unknown reason, and like 22's. In all S&W's I think the square butt gives it a more classic style than round, and I like how they feel when shooting.
Aside from aesthetics ( the only mark against the gun is it being nickel instead of blue) this particular 34-1 has the best J frame trigger I have ever felt, regardless of caliber and unlike a lot of S&W 22's it chambers and ejects effortlessly with none of the tight chamber issues seen so frequently.
At defensive speed, 7 yard groups of 6 shots can be covered with a nickel and my club has a 1/2 size uspsa steel silhouette set up at 65 yards. Hitting it 6/6 all day long is easy.
Both appearance and function definitely my favorite

I highly agree with the 3 inch 686! Another great choice that I think looks proportionally balanced is a 2 1/2 inch Model 10. Unfortunately, I don't own one….yet!

My gut reaction when I saw the title was ... my 6906, of course!

In keeping with the theme of the section, however, I'll say my 6" 686-4 plus. With that long barrel and full lug I can shoot offhand all afternoon and not get tired.

In 1980-Present wheelguns, I only own a few, and I almost went with my almost-pristine 6" M19-5. Then I remembered a gun that I, frankly, don't normally think about when I ponder my S&W collection, and that is my M69. This 4-1/4" L-frame .44 Mag lives it's life quietly, patiently, hanging in a holster, out-of-sight but not out-of-reach near my kitchen door, loaded with 200 grain Hornady XTPs on top of a .44 Spl +P charge of Titegroup. With this load, I can ding a 10" steel gong offhand pretty much on demand at 50 yards. To be honest, I've never needed it for anything beyond practice, but it's there if I need it.

Hills Carry

What's your favorite S&W model and why?
All my S&Ws are my favorites. Honorable
mention is my Mountain Guns.

The Mountain Guns just have great balance
between aesthetic looks, size, capacity,
durability, and power. One is always picked
for a day carry during hunting seasons,
back country fly fishing, or chores.
