What's your thoughts on a cw permit?

My girlfriend's co-worker was telling her not to get the permit because if she ever did have to shoot someone that the law would be stricter on her than if she didn't have the permit. His thinking is if the situation was questionable, the police could charge her easier than if she didn't have the "training".

If she doesn't have a permit, then she has already broken one law. Any good lawyer could use that in court.

Both you and your girlfriend need to take the CFL class. They should spend a good deal of time on the law. If you still have questions, consult a lawyer, not faceless people behind keyboards.

That is flat out wrong. In many states, such as my home state of WI, the law specifically states that regardless of having a carry permit, self defense law does not change.

If she were to be carrying in public without a permit and isn't in Vermont, Arizona, Alaska, or Wyoming, than she is violating state statutes doing so.

Kudos to you guys taking a class and getting your permits. Every American has a right to self defense.

I don't know where you live, but in Ohio that would be utter nonsense.

1. If you don't associate with "questionable" people in "questionable" places, you'll almost never get into "questionable" situations.
2. The mandatory training for an Ohio CHL isn't that extensive, but it's more likely to keep you OUT of trouble than get you into it.

I'm betting that the "expert" probably didn't have a carry credential, or possibly even a firearm.

It's always better to have a CW Permit. Up here in Alaska though, we aren't required by law to have a CCW Permit to carry "Open" or "Concealed" but its always good to have it for the extra training and responsability.

no one should carry concealed without training and knowledge of when it is permissible to use lethal force.

my humble opinion that everyone with a CCW should have to qualify annually, but i dont see that happening, and it would only be the tip of the iceberg of "more government control and regulation"

you'd be surprised how many people i've seen in training classes cant land 5 shots on an 8x11 paper at 10 feet standing still... thats frightening that they are often carrying concealed and willing to use deadly force. who knows where those rounds will fly.

It is always a good idea that if a state offers a permit to get one it simply may solve a lot of issues. Keep in mind though that many states do not even require training or a shot being fired, it is merely a formality to fill out the paperwork and walk out with your permit.

I have been a trainer for over two decades and one of my many job duties over here is to train locals and third country nationals various subjects and including firearms and believe me the can't hit a piece of paper at 10 feet is not restricted to the US.

I wish everyone would have to go through something to get their permit, but many feel that the mere fact of having a firearm on their person is enough to ward the bad guy away.

In many cases yes the mere sight or presentation of a firearm will discourage the would be attacker however he is not the one you have to worry about. It is that one dedicated individual that due to alcohol, drugs, mental condition or he is trained at a higher level or simply does not care he is the one that you have to worry about, he is the one that you have to train for otherwise you are simply an armed victim.

I to applaud you for getting your permits to carry but it does not stop there keep training, keep learning and more importantly when the time comes never quit, keep shooting until he stops whatever action he did that made you shoot him in the first place.

Exactly. Same here in Michigan. If you hold a permit, no visit to the local police station. I'm not sure if the lgs does the background check but it makes purchasing a gun easier. Main reason I got my permit.

Background checks every time u purchase a weapon here in Louisiana. No matter if u present a CC permit or not. They check every time and just want to make sure they didnt miss something before........You cant fault them for taking extra precaution.
