Where are all the Gen 1-2-3 mags?

They're still out there! Be patient and consistent. I recently found these after a few months of searching. 9 rounds, and a great fit in my 39-2.
Yours have the early version of the 3906 magazine base plate which has a small step at the front edge of the base plate, making it fit properly in 1st and 2nd gen 39 series pistols. The later version lacks that step and those base plates do not meet the bottom of the receiver nearly as well as the early design.

Yes, and thanks to you, jsbethel, ACEd, Sevens, and other members for the great info and pics posted of these. It's funny, I'm now familiar with both versions of the 3906 magazine but haven't found a pic of this style magazine/base plate inserted in that model. The two base plates seem different enough that it's hard to visualize both being a proper fit in a 3906.

I have several of each 8 round model 39 and 639 mags but couldn't resist the idea of a 9th round in a well-fitting factory magazine. The fact that they're a bit uncommon added to the allure.

That's because the magazine with the stepped baseplate will not lock into a 3906 - it will only work in the 1st and 2nd gen pistols.

I just found and bought a few of these on Ebay:

Hopefully they will fit my 439.

That makes more sense! Thanks - the comparison pic you posted in other threads was clearly labeled but my brain focused on the mags themselves. So these are longer 639 mags, not 3906 mags.

To OP David, sorry for a bit of thread drift but it brings up a good point. When searching online, make sure you use the right model designation! Of course thats assuming the sellers are listing their items under the proper names too. And what some consider a Model 39 mag may be listed as for a 439, 539, 639, etc. Your ebay purchase should function just fine, just stick out from the bottom a little.

David,

Thanks for coming back and reminding me.
I have only the 2 original mags for my 4006.

My plan was just 3 for anything I have but due to no new production on these I just grabbed 2 VG condition from GB...

The 4th edition S&W bible indicates there are two versions of the 3913TSW. 1997-1999 3913TSW calls for a 7rd magazine, 2000-2006 3913TSW calls for a 8rd magazine and slide is labeled '9 Tactical Smith & Wesson, and those were the 'railed' versions.
The pic shows the baseplates for CS9 versus 3913TSW.
Mag 'C' IS shorter than 'D' & 'E', and 'C' has metal baseplates instead of plastic baseplates of 'D' & 'E'. Mag 'C' produces a better concealable pistol as nothing sticks out past the bottom of the magwell. Mag 'C' are rare and very desireable. 2nd pic.

I was able to pick up a 4006 10rd mag for 21.50 including shipping on fleabay. Not bad IMHO.
Those original 10rd 4006 magazines are getting to be hard to find. Good score.

I took the standard commonly used chart, 1st pic, and put it in photoshop and did some re-arranging, 2nd pic, and then added some notes, 3rd pic.
Let me know if some other notes need to be added.

Turns out it was too good to be true. Seller just messaged me, said it was relisted but he didn't have it. Order cancelled and refund issued. Bummer:(
Keep an eye out for the 10rd mags on GB. Every once in a while I see a 5-fer-$100 deal from pawn shops or police supply shops... That's how I got mine.

That chart is excellent... I know it will be a big help to me, and I plan to print off a copy to keep in my files added to supplement SCSW-4. I just have one question though. How do you know without actually seeing a good picture which of the third generation 39 series mags have the little step in front of the black rubber baseplate to fill in the gap left by the longer mag body? Did I miss that somehow?

Thanks again for posting this!
Froggie

I can't answer that as I don't know and I would need one of each for a picture.
Probably best can be answered by member of post #45.

Adding for the 'charts', there are a many 'transitionals' also that aren't figured in them.

I also use these.
