I used to carry a Mustang but finally decided I didn't care for cocked & locked with the Mexican carry I'm fond of (the Mustang ain't exactly a 1911). I was also concerned that 380 is too marginal even with modern ammo. If the old fashioned ball is still considered the best choice for penetration... that says something about the rounds effectiveness.

When I was looking for a replacement .380 I too came down to the Ruger or the BG but then I saw the micro 9mm's and ended up with a CM-9 and a Sig P290. For the same size package I find them to be very accurate and much more controllable than the Mustang. Now I have a Bersa for the fun of shooting 380. It's true I had some issues with the Sig but they seem to have been cleared up and their new model has re-strike capability. If I were buying one today, that's what I'd look at.

After 50 rounds the elevation screw was gone!! Called S&W and new screw on the way! Of Course trigger pull is still hard even after I have put it in traction see pic!
So Far I like my Taurus TCP more for it's

What does wrapping a wire around the trigger do?

Why a .380 for personal protection when there are so many same sized guns on the market in 9mm?

Ammo in 9mm is certainly less money and readily available....at least here in Montana supplies of .380 are spotty at best.

Only 9MM I know of that is the same size (but not weight) is the Rourbach, and it's about 900 bucks. The new Shield is hardly a subcompact gun. I had the Ruger LC9, but for pocket carry, which is what I bought it for, it was still a bit too big. I sold it and will eventually be picking up the Bodyguard.

My LCP is perfect for pocket carry and only weighs 12oz fully loaded. I haven't found a 9mm that compares.

I hope your son has had a chance to actually fire the guns he is interested in. I disliked the trigger pull on the Ruger LCP, much preferring my KelTec P3AT. I put a Handall Jr. grip on it and it's even that much more comfortable to shoot than the Ruger.

That's interesting, as I had the complete opposite experience. Which underscores your point of trying them out before buying, if at all possible. :)

There is a handy series of gun overlay images at armspost.com/forum/ in the pistol comparison images sub-folder. They overlay most of the popular models available.

I'm 5'-10 175lbs and I can front pocket carry a 9mm CM9 or P290 easier than a J frame (not in tight jeans -those days are over). Those two are much smaller than a PF9/LC9 and closer to the LCP in size.

Ruger LCP, S&W Bodyguard and the PPK have all been replaced by my Kahr P380. Best 380 on the market IMO...

It seems that I am on the wrong forum. Is this the Kahr forum? I have the BG.380 and the shield. I belt carry the shield (too big for discrete pocket carry) and pocket carry the bodyguard. At the range I find both of them accurate enough to head shoot at 7 yds. After you get used to the bodyguard trigger, accuracy is no problem. I would not pocket carry a single action pistol. To me that is an accident waiting to happen and you all know about ol murphy.

Kel Tec 380 has served me well for a couple years now. I know Ruger is a good brand, but I think they copied Kel Tec's design on that one. I trust the original better.

I would NOT trust my life with a Taurus or Diamondback. Too many stories of feeding/reliability issues. And that video of the TCP trigger not working is pretty scary.

I have several 380's and buy far my favorite is my Ruger LCP. Elsiee goes everywhere I go, sometimes as a BUG sometimes as my primary when I can't carry something larger. My LCP wears the Crimson Trace Laserguard, no buttons to push, it activates when you grasp the grip. I load her up with Speer 90gr Gold Dots, alternating with WW 95gr FMC FN. I just drop it into my pocket and forget that its there until its needed. The LCP carries that well. Remember the best gun to have in a gun fight is the one you have with you.

Recently, purchased a Bersa 380 plus. Put 75 rounds thru it. 25 Hornady critical defense, 50 american eagle, and found it to be very accurate. for the price, it seems like a quality weapon and it performed well. Can't say it's been given a true test. Feels comfortable and has a smooth trigger.

I was packing a SIG 238 (didn't want to wear out my Colt), then I discovered the SIG 938 3 months ago. Great little 9mm, only 9 that I like that is more concealable than my 940. Everything works like a 1911 so I am right at home with the controls. Hoping the trigger gets a little better-it has improved over the 1st 100 rounds. So far everything works like a swiss watch. But then again the 238 had some teething problems but I didn't have any of those either. Then I compare it to my 3914, and the Smith looks good all over again, damn! to have such problems........
