Cal44, like I posted, I have more than one J frame. The 649 being one. I picked the Model 36-1 because of the reasons listed in my post. As far as the 649, the Bodyguard is an excellent choice. You still have the hammer accessible if you want to make a single action target shot. Between the Model 60 and the 649 - I'd have to rate them about equal on function and that is after carrying both models for over 35 years. Given both for an equal price, it would be a coin toss.

Voted 642 as it is my main go to for a BUG, although the LCR in 9mm is starting to get carried more.

For some reason I've got a strong hankering for a humpback lately........:D

a model 40. One in blue, one in Nickle. just two digits: 4 and 0. nothing fancy. Nothing better.

I carry my model 49 in my jeans pocket in colder weather although for compact I have been using the Ruger LCP lately.
I had a nickeled model 36 as a rookie which I replaced with the 49. My dear sweet mom wanted a gun because she lived in the middle of Detroit. So I gave her the 36 after teaching her to shoot it and told her to keep it in her house.
One day while doing work for her, I decided to find it and wipe it down. I looked in all the normal places and couldn't find it. So next time I see her I ask and she pulls it out of her purse!
The funny part was that my mom went to Windsor Canada several times a week to play Bingo back then.
I sold the well traveled revolver to my friend Jim shortly after that and gave mom a baseball bat.

SAFireman, I've got just about as many miles of carrying as that Chief!!! Well, not quite. I've been officially carrying since 1975, when I joined the police department, but unofficially since about 1965, when I joined the Navy. One thing that remains constant for all of us J frame lovers, is that mechanically they are all alike. True, some are made from lighter materials, some have an exposed hammer, some are nickled, some blued, some stainless, but they all are alike in that they are probably the most potent, reliable, concealable, effective small handgun that has ever been devised!!! I have all three basic configurations: cenntenial, bodyguard, and chief. And quite a few variations of each. I have never had one that didn't work. I also have a couple of Terriers, which is the I frame that preceded the slightly larger J frame. They are little marvels also, and sometimes I like to carry one of them. But as I said above, the 340PD is in many ways the ultimate evolution of power in a very small package. Of course there is a trade off in increased recoil. I have found that the .357 mag Speer gold dot short barrel load with the 135 gr bullet is the lightest recoiling magnum load that still has sufficient power to give one confidence. Of course they are also pretty pricey... At retail, almost a buck and a half apiece, when you can find them. I've had them on back order from midway for months now, but fortunately I stocked up yhe last time I saw some for sale.

It is good to see the 342PD getting a little love in this thread.

Defective Poll!

You only allow one choice!

;)

642 was EDC for many years, but now it's a 342.
(Seller's photo, it's wearing CT 103 grips now)

Before the 642 was a 649-3:

Seems like I'm try to drop a little weight every few years. But, I still have them all, and I ain't getting rid of any of 'em anytime soon!

moosedog, I can't believe you left your mom in the middle of Detroit without a good handgun!! I remember when my mom was still alive, I gave her one of the original 38 Spl Charter Arms snubbies. I think it was an Undercover. Had a 5 digit serial number, and I bought it new at the Navy Exchange in Charleston, SC in 1968. She loved it, and by then I had moved on to Smith and Wesson. She lived out in the country, and felt like she needed something for protection. I taught her to shoot with that little gun.

The poll is a little misleading as I constantly switch out J frames depending on mood or situation. So picking the most frequent is not really accurate. Bodyguards, Chiefs Specials and Centennials all get time.

Primary and Secondary Carries!!

For those who carry j frames.

Select your most frequently carried revolver.

Include 442 in the 642 category.

Hello all,

Don't think I have jumped ship!!

But my primary carry is a Taurus 738 380acp!!! Just cause, cause it is so light and flat, i.e., concealable.

My "go to secondary" is a Model 360PD Scandium-Titanium 357.

Both good pieces. Both will do their job if I do mine. :D
