The title for this sub-forum is: "S&W Revolvers: 1980 to the Present"

and the description is: "All NON-PINNED Barrels, the L-Frames, and the New Era Revolvers"

I have 2 revolvers, a 686 and a 629 that were made "1980 to the present" which have pinned barrels and recessed cylinders.

Granted, my exposure to S&W revolvers is limited to those 2 and a 27-2 I inherited from my father.

Would it be more appropriate for posts regarding my 686 and 629 be made in the "S&W Revolvers: 1961 to 1980", "3-Screw PINNED Barrel SWING-OUT Cylinder Hand Ejectors WITH Model Numbers"? Or are they considered "New Era" pieces?

I've never seen a pinned barrel on an L-frame. The L-frame came about when S&W was eliminating pinned barrels and recessed chambers.

My mistake. The 686 is pinned but not recessed.

Sorry for the confusion.

There are pinned and recessed 629s, and some with a recessed cylinder only, but no pinned barrel 686s as far as I have seen unless someone did it as an aftermarket modification.

I was an early adopter, and owned several L-Frames, but have not encountered one with a pinned barrel. Aftermarket? Sure like to see a photo..

Steve, just to make sure... the first pic is a model 64 with a "Pinned" barrel. The second pic is a 686 which is not pinned.

Thank you @413Maxwedge

I have circled in red what I thought was 'pinned'.

Please note I have included the obligatory toes. :) Not mine however.

That is a pin, but that pin is present on all S&W revolvers except on those that have been recently redesigned to eliminate the lock on the ejector rod tip. The pin in the term "pinned & recessed" refers to a pin that goes through the frame and the edge of the barrel shank. It's the barrel pin that was eliminated from S&W revolvers around 1980.
