I was checking this out at a local gun shop and they had two guns there very high on my want list:

First was a 6.5 inch M-29-2 Blue, unfired with presentation case, box, all papers and tools even the wax paper.
Everything very clean, great trigger pull, perfect timing, only fly is it has a couple of slight scratches on the bottom of the trigger guard, to small of feel, not overly visible but there.
Price $930.00

Second is a 6 inch M-27-2, Blue, it has been fired but is in mint condition it also has a great trigger pull, and perfect timing. Forcing cone is in like new condition. No papers or box.
Price $800.00

If both guns where on your wish list which would you choose if you could only afford one!

Do you want a .44mag or a .357mag more? Which one is harder to find again?

If I could only afford one, but knew that I had enough income to put some away in the future, I'd put half down on each on a layaway deal.

Because, the correct answer to your question is to GET BOTH!!!!

I did ;)

The 29 is a better value by a wide margin. But the 27 will be shot unlike an unfired 29 "package." I'd buy the 29 because I have other .44's to shoot. JMHO. Joe

I once owned a 29-2 in box like you describe, in mint condition. I showed it to a shooter/friend and told him that I wouldn't shoot it because of its "like new" condition. He said "Why would you own a gun you won't shoot?".

I sold it and now own this 27-2, which I enjoy shooting very much!

Tough choice! Everyone should have both of the Smiths you mentioned, but if only one is affordable, get the M27-2.

Sir,

I would get the 29. Out of curiosity and in case you don't buy it, could you tell me the serial # on the 29, and the phone number of the shop?:)

Andy

P.S. to Dosgatos: BEAUTIFUL wood on that 27. Nice blue, too.

I would go with the 44 Mag.
ANYTHING you can do with a 357 Mag, you can do with light loads in the 44 Mag.

And you can always use full power 44 Mags when necessary...

When in doubt always choose the larger caliber weapon!

Just me, I think the M27 is an awfully heavy (but nice looking) 357 while the M29 is the class leader in 44 magnums, hands down.

2hawk nailed the only acceptable answer... Do whatever you can to buy them both.... If you walk away from either it will haunt you forever... It's kind of like asking which one ounce gold nugget do you want. :)

If you never plan on shooting it, the NIB revolver of that vintage era is the one to get. If you plan on shooting it at all, it will never be NIB again and that changes things.

Apples to apples though, I'd go with the 27-2 because it was S&W nicest model premium revolver. They are gorgeous.

The best answer though . . . is to find a way to get both. Revolvers like these are really going up in value vs. the run-of-the-mill models and the ones that are not in great looking condition.

Ya better move fast though. Although the prices aren't screaming deals the prices are fair . . . and I doubt they'll last very long in the shop.

Tom

Both are the Porsches of S&W and I'd do everything I could to get both of them.

If forced to choose as stated by the OP, my personal choice would be the 27-2. To me 357 mag is the all time best revolver round and you can comfortably shoot for long range sessions with either 357 or 38 sp in a big N frame. The 29-2 is great too, but not as much fun to shoot for extended sessions...as mentioned 44 sp makes it more comfortable, but 44 sp commercial ammo choices are more limited and pricey. As Tom pointed out, if you don't plan to shoot it then the easy choice is the nib 29-2, but if you are going to shoot it (and WHY NOT!!) then I would go with the more shootable gun, the 27-2 for $150 less. Since it is fired and has no box you might be able to talk them down a little on the 27...I doubt they are gonna budge on the 29!...good luck!
