Whiskey Before Bed?

Not sure that the booze is doing you any real good. I'd drop it.

I've always found good sleep is learning to clear the mind. Nothing will keep you awake more than mental exercises, like replaying your day, etc. Me, I think about relaxing things such as walking on the beach alone, on a deserted island. Things like that.

If you have to have alcohol, why not try red wine? At least that's good for you.

Me...I can't allow myself to drink at all. Scottish/Blackfoot Indian on one side of my family and Cherokee on the other.
Not good to mix that blood with anything!

Hmmm! I always thought that tea was a bad idea since most contain caffein. But chamomile is apparently OK according to a quick check on line. Thanks. I just hope it doesn't taste like Earl Grey, too flowery for my taste.

It won't taste like Earl Grey, or any other conventional black tea, flavored or not. (Earl Grey is flavored with oil of bergamon.)

True "tea" is all a plant called Camellia sinensis, whether it's grown in India, Ceylon, China, or Kenya. It is, well, "tea." Green tea is black tea that hasn't been "fired" after fermenting. Oolong tea is intermediate.

What you are thinking of trying is an herbal "tea", a brew from a whole different plant! Since ancient times, witches, shamans, and other healers have prescribed such items for a variety of medical conditions. How effective they are depends on the ailment and the skill of the blender. The FDA doesn't regulate these, so you have to rely on the company packing them. Some may be allergic to some. Ask your doctor.

One that you might try as a relaxant and an antioxident and source of Vitamin C is the South African Red Bush (Rooi Bos, in Afrikaans). I like the flavor, and some very reputable tea shippers offer it, including Twining's. But it isn't true "tea." An herbal....

My grandfather used to take a small single shot before going to bed. I always remembering him doing it. He lived to be 83 and had a very hard life as tabacco farmer. It worked for him.

Ron,

The simple fact that you ask the question is your answer. Booze isn't you. I like many others find that reading clears my mind and put me to sleep. I also sleep when I'm sleepy and don't worry about it when I'm not. I may go fishing at 2am, or go to the shop and reload ammo, or just watch an old movie. Sleep will happen when you get tired unless there is a medical problem causing the insomnia. Good luck.

I don't think I would ever get to sleep without the TV on. The TV in my bedroom has a feature that allows a delay of 30 or 60 minutes before shutting off.....

The other night, the cable was off when I went to bed. I thought I would never go to sleep. Seems like I can't stand silence.

I'm the same way! If the room is silent it seems like I'm lying there waiting for something to happen. GOT to have some white noise goin' on.

(Sorry for the thread drift)

I rarely ever drink after I've had supper. Alcohol affects sleep patterns adversely, so even if it helps you get to sleep, the sleep you get is not as beneficial. I've found that I'll NEVER get even the slightest hangover if I have nothing alcoholic to drink after supper, and I eat fairly early, usually about 6:00 PM. Now, BEFORE supper, Mr. McKenna and I visit regularly.

For several years, I used Benadryl as a sleep aid. Then, I discovered that it can have the same effect as an enlarged prostate and cause urinary problems. We middle-aged guys don't need that.

Melatonin, in the 300 mcg dose, works well for me with no apparent side-effects. I don't take it more than 3-4 nights in a row before skipping a couple nights. It should be safe.

I've also found that, while I drink coffe all morning most days, I'm much better off avoiding caffeine after lunch. That can cause sleep problems, too.

Good luck. I know it can be frustrating.

Some of us have sleeping problems and have found ways to cope with it..

Michel Jackson couldn't sleep......look what happened to him.

I agree 100% with the whole post, except that I'm not big on fishing.

Dunno about whiskey before bed, but there's a great OT music song called "Whiskey Before Breakfast". Actually...before bed I prefer Ambien.

I think the alcohol is a false positive. I'm saying this from experience, and alot of it. In the words of the funny Ron White, I've seen me do it.
I now do the reading thing, especially since I got the SCS&W,3rd edition.

It blocks the first stage of REM sleep, it'll work for awhile, but eventually you'll experience REM rebound if you keep it up
