Whiskey Before Bed?

like most folks here, I urge being prudent - but working a day/swing/grave rotating shift has given me the same issues you're talking of. Although sipping a shot before bed helps me, I think it's more due to the routine and "power down" aspect than the alcohol. I'm not using the knockout power, just the "OK, let's relax" factor. It's more about powering down and relaxing, like most of the advice here. Besides, Grandma said I inherited the 'Irish' and I better be careful with the whiskey :D

Man, you folks are scaring me with this post and some of the responses. { for those not married or in a commited relationship, we are taking about safe-sex I hope }. This was a prime subject in my Health practice as many of us especially athletes have trouble sleeping and or falling asleep. You haven't felt insomnia until you've been shot full of anabolic steroids and spent a few hours in the gym with a gallon of caffiene and a bucket of protein shakes.
This is insomnia my friends.
Ok, so NO BOOZE before beddy by, might, and I mean might help you fall asleep, but definately wont help you to stay a sleep, and you will probably wake up shortly anyway.
Benadryl, Excedrin PM's all wrong- do they work- yes, but they are not made for what your using them for and should not be used as such for long periods of time.
Natural cures such as teas and cammomile and valerian, are OK, but my number one first pick is Melatonin. Now, Melatonin needs to be understood to work properly. First more is NOT better it is worse!!
Take it approximately an hour before bed time, and the lowest dose available you find like 1 mg.
Dont buy the 2 or 2.5 or even the 5 until you know that you need that amount and it will be condusive to sleep and not staring at the ceiling.
Some basic does and don'ts of insomnia. Dont watch TV imeadiately before bed time, and don't even think about the computer especially forums that might get you rilled up. Yes I know you love looking at all of Joni's beautiful collection of pistols and revolvers, but there is always someone you dont care for that just seeing thier post or name and your adrenalin starts like it or not.
Now I'm a man's man as much as anyone here, tatoos, guns, Harley's, Drag Racing, you name it, but I love my Baby NIGHT TIME Bubble Bath before going to bed and I'm man enough to admit it. Try it , it works. Your wife will love you clean and your new smell and this might start another already mentioned ritual before bed time with you and the misses.
My work is done here, shut off the TV, turn off the computer, take your melatonin, your nice warm baby bubble bath, make momma happy and then roll over and get to sleep.

I forgot to add, I prefer the sublingual Meleatonin. The liquid is nice too, but you might find your self in the more is better mode and that's all wrong. Even your Doctor wont have the answer here, so experiment, you cant hurt yourself. Try a sublingual, then the liquid, and even a capsul. You will also need to find your dosage to be effective but not counter productive. If you wake up in the night dont be afraid to take another, but I would warn against taking one past say 4 AM, as this might leave you drowsey in the morning. Give it time and your body time to adjust. Remember your levels just decline with age, this is normal, so we are just trying to restore the levels to that of when we were younger, 26

RonJ i come from a very long line of alcoholics so i suggest you avoid the whiskey before bed like the plague.

If you drink alcohol to go to sleep: Eventually you will need more alcohol to achieve the same state of drowsiness. About then you'll reach a point where you drink, go to bed, go to sleep, and 3-4 hours later your body will again require the sugar the alcohol provided. Your eyes will snap open, your heart will be beating 90 mph and you will be WIDE awake. You may then decide to have a couple more drinks to get you through the rest of the night. I've had some experience. I have recently quit drinking. I find I need almost total darkness to fall asleep. I also play a CD of a rainstorm to drown out neighborhood noise.

Hey RonJ, you've got a lot good replies thus far, don't know that I can add much. But, since you asked -

My response would be to keep it natural, aka several replies have noted. Be active, which means, get off your butt. Myself, I do 4-5 miles on the road daily, sometimes w/my dogs but get out off your butt and get your feet moving - get out of the house/apartment/room/whatever, get on the road - do something active. I don't care if you feel like ****, do it, trust me, do it. And if after a couple of weeks you find it not working, - - - do the same rouitne in the pm. No one said this was going to be easy - did they (not counting your mom) - forget the easy part, just do it. You can thank me later. Do it. Trust me, probably the last person to tell you to trust them was blonde and 20 something - BUT, trust me, get off your butt and get your feet moving.

You've heard of mind over matter, this is FEET OVER MATTER, or old school - in a word - move.

Said a lot of what I was going to say about melatonin.

To the OP: Other natural sleep aids have been mentioned: valerian root, chamomile, lavender, bedtime routine...all good. Avoid booze to help you sleep, short story is it's just bad all the way around.

Warm milk and a soft oatmeal cookie always made my girls sleepy.

A good 12 year old single malt works pretty good for me.

Me too. But those who said too much alcohol will make you sleep worse, are also right. Go ahead and laugh at a "old wives tale" if you want. But warm milk works pretty good.

A shot of whisky helps me go to sleep quickly, but not for long. Camomile tea gives a headache, but a good cup of Jasmine (from the Orient) and I sleep long and sound.

Insomnia can be awful, especially when chronic. We all have a tough time now and again, usually temporary emotional disturbances account for that. Life can be rugged for us sometimes. But if you've truly reached a point where there is no rational explanation of why you can't sleep, I'd suggest talking to your physician. This isn't exactly the best place to get medical advice, and sleep deprivation can be very serious. Treat it as such and get some professional help. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Many home remedies work for some. Figuring out which may help you could merely prolong your agony.

Cheers;
Lefty

I just have a couple cold beers it works for me. It will relax you to. I'm personally not much of a whiskey drinker as it makes me feel like I'm real hot and break out in a sweat. Last I herd a couple beers a day keeps the Doc away. Its what I herd and I'm sticking to it. Lol!!

Lagavulin Single malt scotch and sex used to work for me, BUT, the price of Lagavulin and "you know what" now keeps me up till the wee hours!
